If you’re up for something a bit different, head to Kapitelplatz in the centre of Salzburg and try out a game of street chess. It doesn’t cost anything to take part, and people gather around each day to wait their turn.
A large chess board is painted onto the square and participants move around it, slotting their over-sized pieces into the black and while squares. Various barrels surround the giant board and on top of these you’ll find more traditional chess sets. These are also free to play.
