The way I got around the prohibitively expensive train rides in Austria is with the help of this amazing site called
http://www.mitfahrgelegenheit.de.
It essentially lets you search for any lifts (german=mitfahrgelegenheit) that users have posted - there are truck drivers posting cheap rides all the way down to Italy and back.
I just searched for trips between Vienna and Feldkirch and there are more than 2 pages of results with the cheapest offer starting at Euro 6!
The only problem is that the site is in German and some grasp of the language would be helpful...otherwise it really is the cheapest - and most fun - way to get around Europe.
