This article from National Geographic tells you how to get a great deal on the small works that can only be found in the remote northeastern part of Brazil for a tiny fraction of what you might find them for in the U.S.

Plus, you can avoid the wealthy middle man and buy directly from the artisan, who would probably make more selling it to you directly than if they tried to export them.

What do you think about this? How does this fit in with fair trade?
Do you buy fair trade products that are sold locally?
If so, why? and if not, why not?
Does trekking into the wilderness (with its inherent environmental costs) justify finding goods that are acquired through respectable means?
