Just a few questions about travel in NZ, me and the missus are looking at doing a camper van rental out there where we can get one for three weeks for just under $800 for the 3 weeks all up, before we commit to this we just want to make sure of a few things..

Weather, we would be traveling July 25th to August 18th, how impractical is a camper van in winter months? What is the weather we will be looking at? How cold will it actually get and how much is there to still do and see?

This is what we have now...

Fly into Christchurch, down to Dunedin, Queenstown, Caterbury maybe?, Christchurch August 7th for the NZ vs AUS tri nations game, then upto the north Island, Wellington, Hamilton, Auckland, and then we fly home from there

Any advice, tips or anything else I am more than willing to take in

As always, am willing to converse by email as well - crashediv@hotmail.com Just put travel pod in the subject line so my spam filter can sort it, would hate for that well writtin advice to get chucked,

Thanks for any tips and help

Dan

Hi Dan,

We have traveled New Zealand full-time 24-7/365 for over 5 1/2 years and never had any trouble with the weather as the roads are well maintained even in the far South where snow will be on the roads then.........just be ready for perhaps waiting for a snow plow...it is easy in a camper van to wait....When in the Dunedin/Queenstown area is when you may hit bad weather over an extended period mostly. The North island is quite safe.....
As far as cold it relates to the middle of the winter in the northern hemisphere but the quality camper vans rented here all have plenty of available heating and all holiday parks have electrical hookup tpo keep one warm and toasty during the night.
Be sure just because you get a price deal on a camper van it is exactly what you want. I would hate to see you were stuck somewhere in an old model van that has crapped out on you or not have a good system to keep you warm. Plenty of bad rental companies out there
willilng to send you off in vehicles not up to scratch. The one place you really need to be sure
you get good equipment that will not spoil your trip......

Cheers,

Ron
