Wow, that's going to be quite the trip!

How long are you giving yourself to do that?

Here's some advice about traveling in south america: don't walk around with lots of valuable stuff and you won't get mugged. In case you still do get mugged NEVER under any circumstances resist, just give them all you have with you.
Follow these two advices and you will have the best time of your life in South America!!

Also don't relly on trains to travel over there as they are pretty much unexistant (at least in Brazil), so either travel by bus or plane. Depending on how long your journey is it might be worth to put in the extra 50 bucks to get a plane ticket cuz roads are pretty damn bad.

The roads may not be up to European or North American standards, but the buses are incredibly luxurious. Some (leitos) have fully reclining seats that make them virtually beds.

Brazil is quite big so given the conditions of the roads even the best car/bus in the world would still take a long long time. So i guess it depends if you want to spend over a day or two travelling but looking at the scenery along the way or just get where you want to get..
