Will be flying into Geneva and need to get to Zurich.
Anyone taken the train thereabouts? How was the trip?

And how do Geneva & Zurich compare?

Cheers!

Its easy to get the train between the two, should be a couple of hours max, and the trains are always punctual and generally really nice. You can search on theRail Europe website for train times and prices etc.

Geneva seemed more of a cultural city to me, a place where you could just spend ages getting soaking up the culture and walking down by the lake. There were some really nice parks there, and I felt like there was more of a relaxed vibe there. Whereas Zurich was more lively, a bit more hustle and bustle, being a banking town. Lake Zurich is lovely aswell. If you have a chance there are loads of great little places to stop on the route between the two - loads of picturesque little towns and villages in the mountains, fringing Lake Geneva and Lake Zurich. I miss Switzerland!

Thanks for the info, friends.

The US $ is very weak now - any suggestions on reasonably-priced accomodations in either city? Will be 2 of us: quite willing to share bath, etc.

Hostels or hotels? Switzerland's quite expensive anyway as its not in the Euro.

I stayed in City Hostel in Geneva which was nice enough for a hostel, the dorm rooms are small, so we had a private room for the 3 of us. Location is really good aswell, a short walk from the train station.

The hostel we stayed in in Zurich, the Zurich Youth Hostel (scroll down to the one at the bottom - it won't let me link it directly in here - again was super nice, really modern and clean and had an amazing free breakfast! It was a few minutes walk from the banks of Lake Zurich, but the only disadvantage was that it was a short train ride into the city centre. We met alot of friendly people there aswell, I'd definately recommend it.

Check out HostelWorld. We have always found good places to stay on that site.
