I am a family unit with 2 10 yr old kids. We are heading to Italy this June for 17 days and aim to have a different flavor gelati every night! We are thinking of making a loop start/end in Rome. We are thinking heading north after Rome, then east towards Siena. Any suggestions of best cost-effective way to get there? Trains? rental car? buses? From Siena we are thinking of sticking close to the coast, making our way south towards Pompei ..; then back to Rome again for our flight out to London. Anyone who has traveled on these parts with suggestions/thoughts on this route? Thank you very much!

I live in italy, and i strongly recommend you to rent a car.
Inside Rome, you'd better use public transport... don't even try to drive a car inside Rome :-D but when you leave Rome, you should reallly rent a car....
Otherwise, you will waste a lot of time, and some interesting places outside the cities, are not reachable without a car, at all.
