North America to Europe Without Flying Solution

I know this question has been asked quite a few times.

*Also, I hope this is the correct forum, I thought maybe US

I grew tired of getting stuck trying to find freighters and any sort of passage to get to Iceland. So some friends and I have been investigating how to get from the NA continent to Iceland without flying and actually came up with some solutions.

After about a year of doing research, we found a couple of people capable of doing charter service from Halifax Nova Scotia to Qaqortoq, Tunu, Greenland, then to Rekyavik Iceland. We have even been in discussion on getting funds to start a ferry business on that route. It would be passenger only.

My question to members here would be:

Would folks be interested in this route? And vice versa?

If there was a charter and you could pay the company directly, would you be interested? What would be the accommodations you expect and reasonable price points you desire?

I have always thought that the NA to Europe non-flying connection has been the Achilles heal for many travelers looking to experience travel with regards to the journey. I have always thought that a solution could be found.

So what do you think?

Steve in Seattle...

Advice sought

Hi guys,

I'll get straight to the point and say i need help ! Yes, having done a decent amount of travel i find myself in need of advice for my next trip. We (girlfriend and I) would like to do a Canada/States/Central America combo and the details are:-

1, It will be from end of Jan til end of March 2010
2, What is a reasonable itinery for that type of trip? We are happy to be 3-4 days in a spot before moving on
3, Advice sought on where to start ie move up from Central America and depart from Canada or vice versa - flight prices will influence this (we will be flying out of and back to London)
4, Weather is an important factor too so keep it sunny people!

Any advice would be warming received, although we are pretty set on the location, other places would be considered, although we have done South America, Asia, Oz, NZ etc before and this seems the last place to cross off the list. However, a possible Russia/baltic states/China option tempt us too

Thanks in advance

Jeff and Sarah

Swine Flu Coverage Importance for Visitors to America

Swine flu is a fatal disease caused by the virus ‘Influenza A’ subtype H1N1. The World health organisation (WHO) declared swine flu as a pandemic after its global outbreak. The virus H1N1 has spread rapidly across the globe threatening humankind. Even those who thought they are far from the pandemic have been made to think twice about Swine flu. USA alone has recorded 1000 death cases since the outbreak of swine flu. Swine flu is very similar to seasonal flu and lasts up to one week. More than 2800 fatalities have been reported from different parts of the world. Traveling overseas at this point of time can be risky.

Swine flu is more deadly for those with weaker immune system and cases with pre-existing diseases like asthma, diabetes, hypertension, obesity and heart disease. People who have respiratory disorders are more likely in trouble than others. You cannot predict how these air borne diseases affect us. Deaths due to swine flu have created a red alert across the globe. Even though you are physically healthy, diseases occur unexpectedly and may devastate you psychologically and financially.

Importance of Visitors medical insurance

Visitors medical insurance is crucial if you are hospitalized in foreign country and need treatment for Swine flu. Health care in foreign countries is very expensive. Hospitalization due to Swine flu may leave you with huge hospital bill.

Visitors travel medical insurance is essential to avoid financial disasters during such hospitalizations. For insurers Swine flu is just another disease and you are covered. Parents or relatives who are visiting their close ones abroad must have visitors medical insurance coverage to travel peacefully. When does visitors health insurance cover you for Swine flu? Visitors travel medical insurance covers swine flu, as long as the policy was purchased before you contracted the disease. Swine flu while overseas is not a headache if you are covered under proper visitor medical insurance.

Where and how to buy Visitors medical insurance?

While purchasing visitors medical insurance learn thoroughly whether it covers for swine flu disease. There are numerous insurance companies to offer visitors medical insurance coverage for Swine flu. There is no point in wasting your money for facial masks to keep away from swine flu. Facial masks are designed for industrial purpose and they will not filter virus, bacteria and other biological bodies. Though we cannot avoid swine flu we can take preventive steps to face it. In that case Visitors medical insurance is also required for financial assistance if hospitalized for Swine flu.

Consider American Visitor Insurance

It is advisable that you go through as many visitor medical insurance quotes as possible. You cannot go to every single insurer enquiring about coverage details. Buying visitors medical insurance for swine flu coverage is more convenient online than going to insurance companies. American Visitor Insurance allows you to access different insurance quotes by prominent providers.

The highest benefit of ‘compare facility’ is scope for evaluation. The purchase of visitors medical insurance after comparing several plans helps you make an informed decision and choose the plan most appropriate to your needs. Even though Swine flu can affect your travel while overseas, you can ensure that it does not impact you financially by purchasing visitors Travel Medical Insurance.

Cycling the Underground Railroad

From Mobile, Alabama, to Owen Sound, Ontario, you can now cycle on a path over 2,000 kms long and trace the same route the American slaves running to freedom did.

http://www.adventurecycling.org/ugrr/

I believe that bicycling is the best way to get to know an area. This path is especially intriguing, because the cyclists are so close to following in the footsteps of the slaves. You can literally put yourself in their footsteps and travel just like they did, experiencing history in a deeply personal way... wow... nice.

40 cheap North Amerian Escapes

If you can't be inspired by this list of getaways in North America, well... you just can't be inspired, period.

Reader's Digest has come up with a comprehensive list of some of the best places to go this summer:

http://www.rd.com/advice-and-know-how/40-g...icle134603.html

Some are surprising:

Door County, Wisconsin: "Known for its cherries, this gem sits on a peninsula that juts out into Lake Michigan. Stay at the little inns in Egg Harbor or Sister Bay, explore lighthouses, and gather shells on windswept beaches. It's called the Cape Cod of the Midwest and has its own version of the New England clambake: the fish boil. Whitefish, potatoes, and onions are heated in a kettle over an outdoor fire. Once the water boils, the chef tosses kerosene on the fire. When the flames die down, the meal is ready."

--Laura Begley, deputy editor, Travel + Leisure

Michigan's Upper Peninsula: "It's rustic and relaxing. Towns like Marquette are a step back in time. It's never hot, and you get a real Yooper flavor (residents are called U-Pers—get it?). Don't miss the tasty pasties (that's a Cornish meat pie, not a typo). Munising is the gateway to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, an ideal spot for hiking."

--Todd Dulaney, editor, AAA Living

Bisbee, Arizona: "Spend the night at the Shady Dell trailer park in a 1949 Airstream, have breakfast at Dot's Diner, then check out the rest of this historic copper-mining town."

--Laura Begley

Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness: "You forget we live in a modern country when you venture into this area on the Wyoming-Montana border. One night, a pack of white, hairy mountain goats came up to our fire to sniff around and butt heads. They were so close, we could hear them munching grass."

--Matt Gross, "the Frugal Traveler," New York Times

Amagansett, New York: "This is my absolute favorite spot in the Northeast. It combines a bit of the glitz of East Hampton and the fishing-village character of Montauk. It's also near East End wineries, the American Hotel in Sag Harbor, which I love, as well as a slew of great restaurants, lobster shacks, bookstores, and the Sag Harbor Cinema, an art movie house."

--Leigh Flayton, executive editor, Arrive

Old Orchard Beach, Maine: "There's an old-fashioned boardwalk and amusement park that's a fraction of the cost of one of the brand-name theme parks. We spent the morning playing in the waves and lying on the beach and the afternoon at Palace Playland."

--Beth Harpaz, travel editor, Associated Press

The 5 Feet Mystery!

Who has heard on the news about the 5 human feet found since August last year? How ghoulish is that? Allegedly the area covers Seattle, WA and out to Vancouver Island and Vancouver, BC! Police and Psychiatrists etc. are trying to work out if these are from a plane crash that happened here 3 years ago, but unlikely! Or whether there are cannibals around snatching joggers as the feet were all wearing running shoes! Or just some crazed serial killer, also someone put an animal foot into a sneaker as a hoax and police thought it was a 6th foot! So far 4 right feet and 1 left foot, although not sure why that is relevant but allegedly there are up to 3,000 missing people in and around these areas and DNA is hard to get from these particular body parts so its gonna be tough to find out who they belong too or even if they are male or female!

Travel mate for Vancouver thorugh the Rockies in July 2008

Hi there!
I am Daniela, 27, from Germany, and I am planning to travel along the west coast USA up to Canada this summer, in July to be precise.
I'm therefore looking for one or more nice and interesting travel mates to share a rent car with to 1) multiply the fun and 2) reduce the cost!! :) I don't mind if you're male or female, you only should be around my age.
My plan is to start the Rockies tour from Vancouver on around the 2nd of July for about two weeks, but at the moment I'm still rather flexible about exact dates and endurance, I only should get a flight from Calgary around midst of July to have enough time for the east coast...
Since 1-2 weeks for the Rockies is not overly long but quite okay I thought of simply driving the scenic route from Vancouver to Banff NP and Lake Louise, but not going over Jasper )I think it might be too far). But I'm open for any ideas! I'd also love to do some activities in the Rockies like horse riding, white water rafting, hiking etc so if you feel that could be your thing, drop me a line! I'd be happy to get some messages from you!
xx Daniela

I'll be hanging around the city for a couple of days and would visit the Yosemite NP then, so if you are interested in joining me for a tour up the west coast later on, it might be a great opportunity to meet up earlier in San Francisco to get to know each other!? (if you are somewhere in between Frisco and Vancouver, you're also welcome to join me!).
And this is the plan: I'd like to travel the beautiful west coast towns along Highway 1, then turn to the inland or drive on along the coast, stop for a while in Seattle and then head on to Vancouver. For that I would like to rent a car and traveling with one or two mates is 1) more fun and 2) cheaper! :) So if you like my idea write me!! I'd be happy to have some nice company to share stories with! Best would be if you're around my age, but gender doens't matter. The tour would be around June 16th to 27th (still open).
I'm moving on to the Rockies from Vancouver for 1-2 weeks so you're more than welcome to join me there, too!
And of course, since we're traveling together, we will negotiate plans & stops together, my main goal is simply to see the prettiest towns around the coast!
I am looking forward to hear from you! Drop me a line!
xx Daniela

Flight attendant sets fire to plane

Have you seen this? Some bright flight attendant, apparently upset at being responsible for the boring Minneapolis to Regina run, doesn't quit, or ask for a different job. Instead he...sets FIRE to the aircraft...yep...Well he's charged with "setting fire aboard a civil aircraft" anyway... whether he did it or not is up to the judge to decide I suppose...

Something tells me somebody didn't take a psychological exam before he was hired for Compass Airlines.

Link to the article at Travel Weekly: http://www.travelweekly.com/Article.aspx?id=173912

Did you get married while travelling?

Hi!
I'm a British journalist writing a feature for a glossy UK women's magazine.
It's about female gap year travellers whose trip turns out to be life-changing when they meet and marry someone while they're away from another country.
I'm looking for a British woman in her 20s who did just that. So if you, or anyone you know took a year out and is living a great new life in North America and would like to tell your friends back home all about it, do get in touch.
Or, if the marriage was a disaster I'd be interested in hearing about that too!
I can do a short interview by phone or email and can pay a fee for the right story.
I'll need pix of you both too.
Thanks!
Karen

Bored this summer??

Hey,

I’m looking for a travel mate (possibly someone closer to my age). The trip will happen during the summer (2007) for about a month. The budget is going to be really, really tight, (am a student) and so the destination/accommodations will be determined on cost. The destination is not decided but anywhere in Canada/US is fine (it must be a driving distance from Toronto). Most of my trips are planned, but I want to make this random and choose destinations on impulse. Nature/hiking/camping/tree-hugging is what I had in mind.

P.S. A car is needed, lol, and a my friend will come along
