I'm totally biased but have you considered Poland ? Accommodation CAN be cheap. Hostels are plentiful but I don't want to name any specific ones for fear of incurring the wrath of the mods ! Food and beer are cheap also. Krakow, Warsaw, ...

Will Eastern Europe is not as cheap as it use to be. Poland is great. Loved Krakoz. Far better than Warsaw, but get out into the backwaters. You will love it

... too much traffic and block smaller roads). Lucky you were able to communicate with those local ladies - hitchhiking is not really popular in poland, especially this time of year and drivers do expect a payment. public transport is reasonable and cheap
