... they just take the tour to machu picchu and they travel to puno by their own and well I recommend you to take a tour because machu picchu it is so popular, you should visit arequipa too and trujillo or some cities from the north of peru. well good luck

Do Plenty of research around the Cuzco area, plenty of package are offered from there, you have to hire a guide to walk the inca trail or take a train from Cuzco to Machu Picchu via Peru Rail.. Book well in advance because the train fills quickly.
