... goes to Hanoi (well the border anyway) which sounds pretty hellish and takes about a day. I flew from Vientiane to Hanoi for about $100 with Lao Airlines which took about an hour. I found them fine and their safety record is a lot better now...... ...

Would recommend the flight to Hanoi from either Luang Prabang or Vientiane. The overnight bus passes through some beautiful scenery but as it is night time you will not see any of it. Would recommend heading north to Luang Namtha first of all, and then ...

No problem, there are daily flight from Vientiane to Phnom Penh and at least 4 or 5 flights per week from Vientiane to Siem Reap. You can apply for the Cambodian visa at the airport upon arrival. You can also go through Bangkok... and for most of ...

Would enter Lao via Vientiane, head northwards and considering heading to Hanoi overland through the border crossings in either Xieng Khouang (Plain of Jars), Samneua (Viengxay Cave complex) or even through Phongsaly.

Issues with bank notes in not uncommon and there are a variety of reasons. Generally of one person does not want it, just try again elsewhere. ANZ Bank in Vientiane is the best for accepting or changing older USD bills that I have come across.

websites that I believe have the most accommodation options are www.luang-prabang-hotels.com and www.vientiane-hotel-link.com Tiger Trails and Green Discovery would be my recommendations for tour operators.

... Can't comment on the slow boat as I went overland from China rather than Thailand but I did take the flight from Vientiane to Hanoi. I would wait until you get to Laos before booking the flight. The tickets are a lot more expensive outside the country ...

my girlfriend's cousin works at the vientiane checkpoint, so we breezed back through to thailand in minutes... and huge improvement on the hour or so going in at nong khai, and much better than then 30 minutes at huay xai.

huay xai, and nong khai across from vientiane both do visa on-arrival. both can be a drag though, so getting it before can save time.
