... on normal train lines, lots of changes but money saved. Once you start earning Yen you are earning a decent amount within Japan and travel costs arent that bad. And there are also overnight ferries which are cheaper than the Shinkansen as well.

Hia, You can also try Hostelbookers.com - they have some great locations in central Tokyo ( sorry I don't know about Osaka or Kyoto) - for a reasonable price. There are some really good ones in Asakusa!
