I stayed in one in Fukuoka. It was great!! You get your own set of kungfu pyjama style clothes to wear. The one I stayed at was male only which seems to be the norm. I did wonder about the showers and there was a communal bath on the top floor. I ...

... myself, but Tokyo is such a buzzing city...very tempting. Steve, what makes you choose Kyoto over Tokyo (in terms of living there)? As for the women, Fukuoka was the best city in that respect...certainly better than the horrors seen in Roppongi!
 
Japanese Rail Pass - value for money?

I had a 7 day pass and abused it royally I went from Tokyo to Fukuoka in a day! Then spent the rest of the week making my way back to Tokyo via Hiroshima, Miyajima, Himeji, and Kyoto. Was a bargain for the travelling I managed to do.

... for a month then get a rail pass. They are pretty cheap and allow unlimited travel on all but the fastest bullet train. I had a 1 week pass and went from Tokyo to Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Himeji and Kyoto which would have cost loads more without the pass.
