I know on the west side that you could go Srinagar/Jammu/Dharamsala/Manali/Leh/ Spitti Valley/Shimla, then perhaps Dehra Dun, maybe, maybe through Nepal or something to get to the eastern range, but once there, everyone I know says when visiting Sikkim/ ...

... of adam's bridge south of Chennai is supposed to be beautiful and not on most itineraries, as it takes a bit of doing to get there. Puri is nice as well, and a big buddhist pilgrimage site. In the mountains, Manali caters to a huge honeymoon crowd.

I actually got two in India, one in Hampi, tightening up my 6 inch mohawk, and then later in Manali got it cut down to about a cm., then shaved it back at my guesthouse to shiny bald. Felt funny, and haven't cut it since. Strange thing is it grew ...
