Thanks for the advice! Diving and hiking is our prime objective, so that's a good tip. Also we are not interested in big cities... so Guatemala city will be left out like you said! Any volcanos you recommend hiking? Thanks again!

Take an early bus from Antigua. It'll take less than an hour to get to Guatemala City and from there you can get a bus straight to San Salvador. You'll probably need to get a taxi in Guate as the bus terminals are spread all over the place!
