... due to the fact that they take a week to issue transit visas (we are South African),otherwise it is a short bus trip +-20km through Slovenia from Trieste. We loved Croatia and its Islands and think it is well worth going to especially if you get to sail.

I visited Zagreb and Split recently. Zagreb was a bit of a dump, there's not many hostels and hardly any touristy things. Didn't hate it or anything but wouldn't go back. Split is much nicer. Lovely beaches, nice bars and restuarants, ...

As sianeth suggested it could be a good idea for visiting plitvice to hire a car in zagreb, and than leave it in Split. It should be possible with big companies like Hertz or Budget...
