... car thing. I did this same thing, but from Calgary to Jasper and Banff. We rented a car, it worked out great. However, from Vancouver to Jasper, there is the possibility of taking a train. You might want to check out those rates too on www.viarail.ca

... Rockies. For scenery and wildlife, would suggest an itinerary such as the one I took back in 1995: four national parks along the Alberta/British Columbia provincial line: Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho. It doesn't get much better than that!

I think Canmore (less touristy than Banff) and Jasper are two great places that are often missed.
