Hey you... I've never been to either, but I'd say Townsville, since you've never been. Looks like it's also got the tropical look and aesthetic beauty, so you and your girlfriend will be happy I think:

I'm going to say Cairns... I enjoyed it much better than Townsville! I found it had amazing diving and then great nightlife! which makes it work both day and night for ya...

the ladies have a point. give it to townsville, probably you won't find the the largest reef HQ Aquarium interesting but your gilfriend might.
