We're Driving to Baja!

Baja California: An alternative Thanksgiving.

My brother and I are driving there tomorrow. Yes, MEXICO. I obviously can't go longer than a few month without leaving the country. It's a road trip. Road trips are my absolute favorite kind of trips! Driving, camping and beachin'. I won't have internet, so I'll have to update when I'm back in Salt Lake next week.

One last immersion in Americana

... along with last night, which was 100% free thanks to the late "Best Rate Guarantee" deal (may it rest in peace). Over the past 2.5 years, we have stayed in many hotel rooms for free across the country. Alas, Wyndham has changed their Best Rate Guarantee (known affectionately as BRG) policy so that it doesn't include free rooms, and this is the last room we had booked under the BRG deal. It's the end of an era, and boy, did we have a good run.

Brighton Ski Resort

This is the earliest in the season I've ever gone snowboarding. There was enough snow, so my dad and I went up to Brighton. Well, kinda enough snow. It's still important to watch out for rocks and little bushes everywhere. It was also a ...

... spent too much time), but I didn't get to give them a proper good bye because I wasn't home when they headed out west. We were way past due for a reunion. The girls graciously agreed to pick me up from my hotel and get us to dinner. In theory this was a seemless plan, however 30 minutes and countless frustrated phone calls later, we decided that Salt Lake, despite any protestation otherwise, impossible to drive in and the fact that there are 5 marriots in the city only complicated matters ...

"How many times was he deported?"

... of worry and waiting the lady came over to me. Everyone had gone through passport control and so she said as she was free she would see me. She told me to follow her to some back offices, where obviously the interrogations go on.
I was told to sit on some seats in a waiting area, while she went on the computer to pull up my files. There was another customs guy on another computer chatting to a visiting foreigner. I could hear some of the conversation.
The customs asked the ...

Snow in July?

... you couldn't see the trail. Lovenia Lake is on the other side of the notch. We couldn't find where the trail continued down to the lake. I think it was under the snow. By this point we were all pretty tired so we decided to call it a day and turn back. The trail continues on past several other lakes and eventually ends at Bald Mountain. I think next summer we'll have to start the trail from Bald Mountain and see what we missed.

Going to see what this hiking stuff is all about..

... for what to do if you came across cougars or bears, but I decided to forge on ahead anyways. I found my way to the park and got out to get information about the trail. I had my map, put on my sunscreen & hat and my bottle of water and headed out. It was a good half a mile just to get to the trailhead and about half way up I realized that i had left my cell phone in the car. I decided to trudge on because if I turned around for it I was pretty ...

... onto an unpaved bike trail. usually getting onto an unpaved trail with a road bike is a terrible idea, but wisconsin has a series of trails that are covered with a crushed limestone that creates a dense enough surface that our skinny tires wouldn't sink. still, it puts some extra drag on the bike (especially at high speeds) so it's much more pleasant to set a mellow pace and meander through. this trail is part of a network of old rail lines where the ...

They eventually show up with less money from the magic hat (our communal money) than they left with and very little to show for it. Jessica gets kicked off the bus for stealing and left in some small town outside a Denny's. We played drums and spelled out LOVE on the sidewalk in change asking passerby's ...
