Step 1: Find a car

... and Suzie (the woman whose son had brought the stuff over) told us that Thursday was a public holiday and her family were having a Braai, and asked if we’d call over. We never turn down free food so of course said yes. Thursday morning Gerard called and said we could go have a look at the car, we met him and he led us to where it was being kitted out. The place was full of Land Rovers of all different ages and models, some written off and some getting kitted out, more than ...

Huomenna palaisimme takaisin.

... of the museum's building into the fresh air just before sunset - Claire and I ended up spending about four hours browsing the exhibit - one can't help but feeling deeply moved by the experience, and almost daydreaming about in the enormity of history.

Just a quick note on our evening: for dinner we hook up with a Namibian friend, a documentary filmmaker who lives and ...

Lion Park

... work was in the "Cub World". Here the Lion Park had 4 older lion cubs (5 months), which we were allowed to touch. We cleaned out their pen in the morning (poop scooping) and changed their water, and we did similar with the 4 months old hyenas. After that we were on ticket and giraffe duty most of the day tearing off ticket stubs and selling giraffe food. We were alternating between the jobs but we also got to go into the older lion cubs to ...

... take off. We have read the paper, done the crosswords, gabbed, walked around, eaten, people watched, waited in line for a boarding pass. My nails are done too. All that's left is to twiddle our thumbs and think about the upcoming adventure. Then we have a mere 15 hours or so on the flight. I sure hope we can sleep. The seating is 2/4/2 and of course we got 2 of the middle 4. We're hoping for the best!

Safari!

... on an optional night drive. We spotted a few animals, some elephants came very clsoe, but the best was a real treat, a lepeord sleeping up in a big tree, a very rare sighting! We were all anticipating seeing a lion as that would complete the 'big 5' checklist. We actually went to sleep with the sound of them roaring outside nearby! We set out at 6 am and spent a couple of hours driving around with no luck but jsut as we were about a mile from camp there it was, a lion ...

South Africa Diary

... more of an excuse me thinks), and a cocktail of sheer panic and moments of smugness in the run up to the trip. The Tickets were booked on somewhat of a sporadic spur of the moment vibe. But the route was roughly mapped out in my head, the rest was just detail. "The devil is in the detail" my old boss used to say. "Bollocks to it" I say. Just do it and deal with the consequences later. I was to head initially to South Africa - not for any real interest in the ...

... than obvious that the CBD is not a tourist haven. During our stroll we did have a chance to get to know the Carlton Centre, a lively mall. At the top there is an observation deck called the "Top of Africa" with stunning views of the city, a coffee shop and a gift shop. We enjoyed walking around the CBD. Everyone tried to be as helpful as possible. Although it has no tourist offices, the CBD is a thriving place - full of everyday workers ...

South Africa Trip Summary & Photos

... are one or two tourist towns there but aside from that, we have almost no info about it in our tour book or map. It's kind of intriguing... The main highway runs about 60k inland of the coast in this area. Our current plan is to skip Durban and do a marathon drive tomorrow, getting into the general vicinity of the Wild Coast by evening. The next morning we'll ask around for safety and navigation information and then strike out for a day ...

HIV - how do we cope?

... home-based care properly linked to his type of specialist HIV clinics. At present, his clinics fulfil tertiary, provincial, district and primary health care functions, forcing his tiny staff into spending too much time on patients who do not necessarily require their skills. More rural HIV/AIDS clinics would help "catch people before they become too immunocompromised and crucially persuade them to come for voluntary counselling and testing," he says. "The government needs to ...
