... a pretty little beach, however, that was supervised by the Department of Tourism. There were changing rooms and showers and a team of three life guards was on duty. Surf boards and other water sports equipment was available for rent and refreshment was available from local vendors. A very pushy beach-chair lessor persuaded us to rent his wares.

... need to put two tables together in order to seat the six of us she made a big production of the tremendous inconvenience this presented to her. My patience having run out, I barked at her, which seemed to wake her up some, although no tip for service was paid on this day.

The rest of the afternoon was spent in the surf and in the pool, followed by a very satisfactory dinner of fresh tuna at the El Toucan restaurant.


Out on the reef

... woman, still glaring, who thrust out her jaw in my direction and said "Eh?" I decided to try my luck at another kitchen.

Later that day we gathered on the beach below our apartment for a swim. Happily, a moderate surf was up, creating waves that we could body-surf upon. It was a great thrill for me to be able to share this activity - that I used to live for as a boy - with my son and grand children.

Heavy Caribbean surf pounds into the reef out there, dissipating energy in a spectacular display of crashing white crests on blue sea. ... feet away, a small gathering had formed and had set up a huge amplifier powered by a gasoline generator. What followed was eight hours, nonstop, of the world's loudest and most unrecognizable "music." If it had been calypso, I'd have gotten it. Reggae, OK.
