Reflections one year in - a year of contradictions

... just about) when they’re talking about me, which they’re beginning to realise now.

I have learnt new knowledge too, for example about differences in culture, I’ve learnt more about disability, HIVAIDS, climate change, gender rights, poverty, politics, corruption, livelihoods, facilitation and NGOs, than I knew before (though obviously very much from a Kenyan perspective). I’ve learnt about global education! I’ve ...

... office though to play with the kids once last time and say our goodbyes. I cried, big time, when we had to leave. I gave my little girl a big hug, and I hugged Beth too. It makes me sad and angry that these kids are going to grow up in the conditions we have seen. It is not fair, and it makes me devastated every time I think of it.
After getting home though we started to pack. Maggie kept laughing at us because we would put it off, or just talk about how bad ...

Licence to Boredom

... this will be awesome, and I was super pumped when Kilonzi told us we would be doing the march! Thursday we might have to go to a funeral though... not too excited about that. One of Margaret's cousin's husbands died last week very suddenly (they think he had Malaria, although Den and I feel like his malaria might have been more aggressive because he had HIV). He has left behind his wife and 2 children.
In Kenya there are 4 big events in a ...

Great African Trek Week 8

... included sports bras for women! We camped at Kembu campsite in Lake Nakuru that night which is a huge farm run by a Kenyan British family. We chatted to the owner for quite a while about growing up in Kenya and the schools and things like that. It was pretty interesting.

On Thursday morning we went to Lake Nakuru National Park. This was something like the billionth game drive we'd done so the novelty had kind of worn off. The thing that made this park special though was its ...

Into Africa

... to say, it felt such a treat to go through passport control in Nairobi and not have to justify why I was there, exactly what I'd be doing, with whom, why I happened to be carrying a sleeping bag and for what reason there was a small crack on the screen of my phone.

So I joined my parents and brother in a very friendly wee hostel in Nairobi and we had a couple of days to centre ourselves before the trip to Mt. Kenya.
We visited the National Park and ...

KENYA AND UGANDA: THE GREAT MOUNTAIN GORILLAS

... a charge.

With the Gorilla trekking under our belts, there was nothing left to do but turn the truck around and head back to Nairobi. But this time we slowed it down a bit, and had a few memorable stops along the way. Our first stop was Jinja, Uganda, the self proclaimed source of the Nile River. Some members of our group bungy jumped and white water rafted here, but we opted for a day of R&R by the campsite pool. We had lunch the ...

Every morning a lion wakes up.
It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death.
It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle.
When the sun comes up, you better start running.

Tomorrow, like the gazelle and the lion, when the sun comes up we are off and running on our safari.

... beans, bananas, avocados, mangoes, yams, maizeand sugar cane. Sho Sho fed us mukimo which consists of beans, potatoes, maize, and pumpkin leaves. Afterwards, I walked around the area a little and met some of Mr. Mugo's nieces, nephews, cousins, and siblings. Michelle and I then came across a girl named Lilian Muthoni Gatheca. I was told that Lilian has a beautiful voice so we asked her to sing a song and boy could she sing! She chose to sing a song about the Lord ...

Our last week

... at the house (apparently they have a get together every few weeks, with as many of the 10 siblings as they can get). As soon as we’d met everyone it was already time for us to catch our taxi to the airport. In typical African fashion, we got the car all packed, took final pictures, said weepy goodbyes, got in and – the car wouldn’t start. We thought maybe one of the boys had sabotaged our ride to get us to stay, but all we needed was a jumpstart and we ...
