Sugar Beach Thoughts
I've stayed at SB three times. Each of those stays was for two weeks or more. We also had other members of our family in other units; eg parents, brother and his wife and kids.
I've been to Maui over 20 times. Used to stay on the Westside but it is so expensive and crowded as to be insane.
The location of this resort is good. It's an easy drive from the airport. If you want to go to the Westside, though, it can be a haul if there is traffic (always!). The two bedroom unit we had was large and clean; we re-booked it each year. The pool was sometimes a bit cool and lots of chemicals but that was okay with my little one!
Beach is nice but beware. this area gets tons of wind in the afternoons. Also, watch where you go in the water as there are some rocks.
Nice BBQ area, and grass. Good markets and shopping within a not too bad drive.
Ok, so it's not on Kaanapali beach with the perfect sand and swimming.
But you can drive anywhere if you take the time to search out the good places. Lots of them available so do your homework.
For the price, it's a good deal and a resort we do plan on returning to.
Sugar beach the best
we went to Maui twice now and stayed at two different places first time was 17 days 2nd time 4 weeks we had a great time the condos were georgeous and very clean loved eating breakfast on the balcony listening to the ocean we walked the beach visited some local people up in the moutain areaexperienced chinese newyear go there its all great kihie south and not that expensive our first place had all bamboo furniture island kitchen 2 bathrms in suit laundry 1 bedrm cupboard full of spices etc china gorgeous bed linen i need a bigger page to tell all oh and the weather wonderfull!!!!
Not too sweet at sugar beach resort
We were terribly disappointed with the condo at Sugar Beach. Having been to Hawaii 9 times and always renting condo units, this was by far the most disappointing. Although the beach is wonderful and one of the best I've been on, the employees at reception and the activity group very open and friendly, the unit (and we were shown others) are poor at best. This unit (234) smelled moldy and stale and was not in very good condition. The solution by the rental agents was to come in and spray with F'breeze. It didn't help. It needs a complete cleaning and painting. Although all the appliances were new and modern, the bed was extremely worn and uncomfortable. Two people could not sleep in this bed without sinking to the middle. The rental agents solution - drop off a piece of plywood for under the mattress. The sleeper sofa was 'chained' so that was not an alternative option. I would not recommend this resort to anyone unless they see pictures of each unit before hand and have references they can check. Didn't spoil our trip - we wouldn't let anything take away from the beauty and serenity of Maui and will surely visit again soon.
Maui No Ka Oi!!!!
This was our second trip to Maui, first time at Sugar Beach. We stay for one week in #229, it was conviently located close to the stairs, to the tennis court, to the beach and to the parking lot, and yet it was very quiet. We had an ocean front room, it was worth the extra$$, beautiful view. The garden view rooms did have a view of the ocean but they also looked directly across at the other building, so you may be out on your balcony, and some one on the other side could be looking back at you. We really enjoyed the condo, it was clean and had a very well equiped kitchen. As for the resort itself, it is very nice, well maintained, nice BBQ's (not hot enough though), and in a central location. A bit on the quiet side. It is on a beautiful stretch of beach, but beware where you swim because they are some rocks waiting to stub you unknowing toes. It was quite windy, felt like we were being sand blasted. When we were there, they had complimentary coffee, juices, donuts and fruit on Friday morning by the pool where they put on a bit of a presentation, of places you should go, and advise you may need, it was quite helpful and informative. Definetly go to the farmers market just down the road, you can get fresh produce there at a bargain price, compared to safeway, (passion fruit, pineapples, coconuts...)I think it was on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Also make sure you go to the Swap in Kahului, on Saturday morning, its huge! You won't be disappointed. If you have had your fill of shopping, and just want to beach it, head down to Big Beach its awesome! We will definetly come back to Maui, and more than likely would stay at Sugar Beach.
Vacation Condo At Sugar Beach
I just got back from Sugar Beach Resort and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good sized economy room. I was pleased with the location, view and quiet nature of this condo.
Definitely a nice place!
We just got back from a 9 day trip to Maui. We were very pleased with Sugar Beach Resort. Very clean, well-maintained and ocean fronts are great. One complaint is about the balcony of the first room we got. It was an ocean front (4th floor)but it felt a bit "closed in" because the side walls of the condo stuck out a bit too far and created a "tunnel vision" type effect. We were immediately relocated to the other building (called the" Plantation Building") and it was much better.
Rooms were very clean and had lots of things you need to make you comfortable. It can get windy but so do other places in Kihei. We had no odor problems from the pond that other reviews mentioned. Overall, we really liked Sugar Beach Resort as it is very relaxed and not overly crowded like other tourist type resorts. We would go back!! P.S. It did seem to attract an "older" crowd (65+)-but that was OK with us.
We will be back!!
We stayed at Sugar Beach in late September 2003 and had a great trip.
This was our first time in Maui and we will definately be back. The people were great and very helpful of everything we asked/needed. We were told to ask for an upgraded room next time we visit as our's was a little dated but still clean. Can't wait til next year!!
Loved Sugar Beach
We spent 7 nights at Sugar Beach and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The Condo was nice and it was very well maintained. The tradewinds do kick up and the ocean gets choppy towards the afternoon. Still, the snorkeling was decent and it is close to lot's of things to do. If you're on a budget and want a nice OCEAN FRONT condo, this is the place! We will definitely return!
Great place to stayon a budget
We stayed at the sugar beach for 11 nights and I must say we were pleasantly surprised. We had an updated condo right on the ocean. Sugar beach is not your really fancy resort, but it is clean, well maintained and a great place to go if you are on a budget with kids. We loved meeting people from all over the country while we cooked at the barbeque which over looked the ocean. There is an activity planner right on the property and they were very helpful in making our trip one we will always remember. We will defintely go back to sugar beach.
Budget / windy
If your on a budget it's ok....condos are nice , small pool, Sand Witch shop good....beach quiet....but it's really windy and the fish habitat closer to Lahaina is drying up and it stinks....the sugar cane fields are torched at times, which makes for a great smell...so we had to close up the condo....the complaint is more about Kihei than the condos....but what do you want for $130 a night oceanfront ?

Our mission today was to go out for a nice breakfast and dinner. We have heard about a place called the Gazebo which is over by Napali. We heard it was the best kept secret in Maui. We got to the restaurant at about 8:30am. It appears the secret is out. There was a line 100 feet long and the place was full. Needless to say, if we waited in line, we would be having lunch. So the search was on. We seen that the Paradise Grill had good breakfast. So we ...
... 15 Maui time for a nice nap in the car and stroll through the park. It was lovely despite the intermittent rain and very green. We got a call from the Schooner that our room was ready early, so we hustled down there to check in. Donna unpacked and made soup while I drove to Safeway and ABC stores for the final shopping of the day. We ate dinner on the balcony, and really enjoyed it. We had big plans to watch a movie during the evening, but we were so exhausted that we both just ...

It all went down well except for the zucchini salad which, while it looked delicious, had, as Brian C. put it, "enough saline to fill your yearly quota." It was totally inedible but man, did it look good! The trip back was mercifully uneventful though the catamaran had taken on a slightly urinous and vomitus smell. Kids and Mel are napping now. I'm having a few beers. We are now in the official ...
... got hot and went back in the water. A big wave hit me and knocked my glasses off! The trilogy guy helped me search and eventually another guest found them! On the way back to Maui, our boat followed a pod of bottle nose dolphins. Very cool. Since we had a barbecue before we left Lanai, we decided to have hula pie at Kimo's for dinner. Then a little shopping and back to the ...

Friday was the day we'd been really looking forward to - whale watching!! This is the only tour the hostel does that isn't free, although for $27 it was still a bargain. We loaded up into the boat, and before we'd even loaded all the passengers Lucy and I spotted a whale just out beyond the harbour; we took this as a good omen! And sure enough, it turned out to be a fantastic trip - ...
