Beware! Not all condo's have the TV system
We stayed at Sugar Beach Condos Christmas week of 2004. There was just a very small TV no surround sound system. The bed was so unconfortable that we tried sleeping sideways on it but still woke up with terrible backaches. The beach was filled with sea mess and the water had the stuff floating all throughout it. The worst was we stayed there for one week and were told via their website that we would have cleaning done two times for our stay. Not once did a maid come to clean our place or change the sandy sheets on the lumpy bed.
The location is in the "projects" neighborhood of St. Croix but we did feel somewhat safe. I did not like the bars on the windows of the patio, felt like we were in jail. These bars are on all the condos. When I asked about the bars, prior to arriving, I was told they were there for hurricane protection. Well, after seeing other condos on other parts, safer, of St. Croix I realized they, the bars were there for security not hurricanes.
When I complained about the housecleaning and the bed I was not given a satisfactory answer other than I should have called about the housecleaning before we checked out...same with the bed.
We have been to St. Croix several times and I highly suggest staying at a place called the Tamarind Reef Hotel. Much much nicer and much better snorkeling, much better.
The snorkeling at Sugar Beach, the reef is a long swim in sea grass water...too far compared to Tamarind Reef.
I would not stay at Sugar Beach again, even at a deeply discounted price.
Secondly, the reviewers stayed in one of our more popular units and it has been rented steadily for the past year. We have not had 1 complaint about the king bed. I personally talked to the very next guest in that unit, and asked if the king bed was comfortable and they sais it was "great". When I explained that the previous guest complained bitterly about the bed on the day they checked out, I received the following interesting comment. "Sounds like they cleaned their plate and then told the waiter that the food was no good."
Since we recieved no complaints until checkout day, and therefore were not given a chance to react to them, I can only conclude that their primary motivation was to try to chisel some money off the rental.
(There are other inaccuracies in the review as well but, in the interest of brevity, I will not respond to them all.)
Had a great time!
We have a family of 5 and your condo was perfect. We all had plenty of room to relax. The proximity to the beach was awesome (we were literally on the beach). The views from the balcony were fantastic. Having the tennis courts and swimming pool on site was an added benefit to staying at your place. The best thing about your place was that it was suprisingly affordable!
Lovely Pool Area
My husband and I made our first visit to St. Croix during a week in early November. We think we got a good value for the price at Sugar Beach. Thank goodness we didn't need to use the bedroom loft because the AC in that room leaked into the kitchen! And, one night when there was a heavy rainstorm water began running down the wall
of one bedroom... So our advice is to be careful which condo you rent. We did find everything very clean and we loved sitting on the balcony while we contemplated the azure sea. We were on the 3rd floor and really liked that.
I love to swim and many times I had the beautiful pool to myself. It is built around one of the islands old sugar mills and is quite charming. The grounds are lovely are very well kept. The staff is very nice and helpful.
Breezes next store was a great place to eat!
Our biggest disappoinment was the rocky ocean bottom we found as we waded out to enjoy the beach. My husband cut the bottom of his foot on something jagged. The beach is nice looking but we could not enjoy the ocean because of the rocks.
If you like to walk, as we do, you can't walk very far down the beach or around this area. We tried walking to town one day and ended up in the projects. A Cruzan stopped and told us we shouldn't be there and showed us how to get out. We had rented a car and used it from then on!
We had some great adventures in the car and saw many beautiful vistas. A few roads are not marked at all and others are only marked here and there. The directions form the airport to Sugar Beach which our car rental agency gave us had us hopelessly lost in rush hour traffic. (Later we found one of the Route signs was covered with vines!) The Cruzans were always very very friendly to us and went out of their way to help us and give directions. One young lady even led us to Sugar Beach that day we first arrived and were lost.
Would we visit St. Croix again? No, there are too many other islands we would like to see. Do we reccomend it? Absolutely!! The island has a lovely constant temperature. One end is desert climate and the other end is a rainforest. How's that for deversity?
We enjoyed our week there; relaxed and came home with lovely memories.
Theater on the Beach
Just spent Thanksgiving week at this excellent condo, Unit 215, Theater on the Beach, 2BR, 2BA with a small narrow xtra BR, sitting rm, kitchen, full balcony, on 2nd of 3 floors. Stayed at Club St. Croix next door to Sugar Beach Condo's a few years ago at Easter time, and this resort is far superior (for about the same price). Theater on the Beach is well named as it was equipped with surround sound, DVD player with lots of movies, Hi Def large screen TV in the sitting rm for the TV sports nut, and another large conventional screen TV with music feature in one of bedrms. Extremely well-equipped kitchen with all the appliances you could possibly need for any length of stay. Great balcony overlooking water with super lounging chairs, table etc. Washer-dryer for the one's who want to do laundry. Very cooperative staff - we had to ask for service when they washed down the outside of the condo's one morning and got the balcony a bit messy, and the cleaning crew was there within minutes. Nice beach in front of condo's and beautiful views. Was pretty breezy during our stay, but that made sunbathing pleasant. Close to Christiansted. Plenty of good restaurants at various price levels available throughout the island within easy driving distance. Super markets also close by (we don't recommend Pueblo, but do recommend Total Market (on Rt. 75 just west of 5 corners)). Had Thanksgiving buffet at Carombola Resort - excellent food (and pricey) The owner of Theater on the Beach (Leslie) was extremely helpful and answered ALL our many questions before we arrived. We would definitely return to this unit if we ever vacation on St. Croix again. And we're going to miss those mango daiquiri's!
Great Porch at Theatre on the Beach
Theatre on the Beach at Sugar Beach was wonderful! The well equipped kitchen, the comfy bed linens and the big-screen Hi-def TV with satellite movies made our stay truly relaxing. BUT, our most favorite thing of all was sitting on the porch overlooking the ocean on the comfy chaises...in fact, most nights we fell asleep out there listening to the sound of the surf. We never used the air conditioning as the breeze always kept us cool. We also liked being able to walk to either "Breezes" or "Smuggler's Cove" for happy hour!
Home away from home in St. Croix
We returned from our vacation to St. Croix and were extremely pleased with Sugar Beach condos. Our unit had everything we could have wanted or needed and the beach was lovely. The pool is very nice and the manager's cocktail party is a perfect way to meet other guests. We felt very safe, even though some of the housing projects in the vicinty left a lot to be desired. We would certianly give these condos and the unit we stayed in a big thumbs up.
We love st croix!!
we have been to st. croix several times and we love it. but our experience at the theatre on the beach was the best so far!! it is wonderfully appointed, conveniantly located. the pool is great, the beach is right out your balcony. the staff is very accomodating, they were there when you needed them, but never underfoot when you didn't.
great weather, great place, who needs anything else?
Divine Theatre on the Beach
I visited St. Croix in December 2003 and fell in love. I stayed in the fabulous condo known as Theatre on the Beach from Dec 7-16. It has everything that you could possibly be looking for. If you want that home away from home feeling.(They've created it). If you want a room with a view you, the whole place is worth viewing over and over again.
There's the surround sound, the giant screen tv, the dvd collection and blockbuster is just up the road. The view of the ocean from the balcony (which is the length of the master bedroom and living room) is absolutely breathtaking. You must catch at least one sunrise and sunset. There are 2 bathrooms and 4 beds, but if you are a couple, you must try the double shower. This place has every appliance and ammenity that you could want. I highly recommend it. The staff - everyone from the front desk to the landscaper and housekeepers were openly friendly.
I will never, ever stay in another hotel again. I cried for 2 days when it was time to return to NJ.
P.S. But I'm headed back in April!
Great location, Great Weather, Great Beach
Stayed in unit 215 at Sugar Beach from June 20 to June 24, 2003. Great unit, great resort, great island. First the unit. Really nicely decorated (loved the great art actually) - but the single best feature (well, besides the 30' porch overlooking beach, palm trees and ocean) was the really great shower in the Masterbedroom. No joking - it had two shower heads, and a glass wall - so it was easily one of the nicest showers I've ever been in. Now the resort - lovely, clean, huge sandy beach was great (June is a big month for sea grass in St. Croix - got to keep the turtles happy - but once you get over that - it was fine!
Lots of fishy sightings, etc. ) - pool was lovely, large, cool, inviting - and the weather was never hot! Hard to believe, but we never even turned on the a/c - just opened all the windows and enjoyed the breezes. Speaking of breezes - there's a wonderful little restaurant with that name at most a minute away walking - great menu, and the best drinks. The one called Mongoose was so good, we went back twice! And for Sunday brunch we enjoyed the Danish pancakes. So good. Now for the island. St. Croix is a nice inbetween from St. Thomas (too cruise ship crowded for my taste), and St. John. Nice diving, ocean is warm but not hot - and again - the weather was amazing. Good time was had by all.
Caribbean Blue Condo - Sugar Beach
We spent 10 days at the Sugar Beach condominiums in the unit known as Caribbean Blue. We had a wonderful and memorable time. The condo was very nicely furnished and very well maintained, completely stocked with anything and everything you'd ever need (except food, of course). The staff were very friendly and helpful and the common grounds were very well maintained. There was a free "get acquainted" barbecue on Wednesday that was very enjoyable and gave us a chance to meet some wonderful and friendly neighobrs. The water just off the beach IS full of short seagrass (NOT seaweed, big difference!!) but wearing watershoes made it totaly tolerable. There's a reef off-shore, and some interesting small fish sightings just off the beach when snorkeling.Convenient location. Went for many day-time walks around the neighboring comunity. Felt quite safe and secure. Most likely would not go for such a walk after dark, though.Beautiful 24 hour breeze though the condo made A/C totally unnecessary. Slept with the patio doors open every night, listening to the sounds of nature! And you got to see the Seaplane land and takeoff on the water almost directly in front of the complex several times every day.All in all, a very nice condo in a great complex in a very good location.

Cruise Day 2 began with a beautiful, bright and sunny day as we cruised into St Croix. The water is an amazing, beautiful, clear blue! Zachary's letter made Jamie smile. During the week we visited the Cruzan Rum distillery, went to a movie, rented a car and drove around the island, did some fantastic snorkeling, jumped off the cruise ship pier and met some incredible people. Again, this island doesn't get the attention of St. Thomas and St. John but maybe that's its charm. We didn't know what to expect when we came here but well worth the trip.

... did I know, about a week into the trip, Evan took me on the most amazing hike through the mountains, along the side of the island. We ended up edging our way over huge rocks overlooking the choppy, east-side of the islands, where it's impossible to swim, in order to get to the gem at the end--a gorgeous sea-green tide pool . We had such a great time! We swam in the tide pool for a while, and finally a few other people who had beat us there left. We ...
