Today was a public holiday (see yesterday's entry) and everything was closed except the cafés which were doing a great business. The sun was out for a lot of the day too.
The school kids were out in force again with their marching and drumming and having a great time. There were priests and lots of dignataries laying wreaths and then more marching and drumming through the lined streets. It was quite moving to see.

Today is our 21st wedding anniversary. What a place to celebrate it. After breakfast we spent the entire day at the beach, Agios Giorgios. This beach is just gorgeous, and amongst the best on Naxos. Apparently the best beaches are on the west coast, and this one did not disappoint. The water is crystal clear and at such a nice temperature. ... could drive up most of the 3000 feet, so I think we maybe only climbed about 1000--but I'm a bad guesser. When we set off on the journey up the mountain, we knew it was 5km (about 3 miles) up and 5km back, so I figured it'd be a nice hike for the two of us.
