... We also passed through numerous tunnels throughout the day (following similar experiences through the last couple of days also). The sheer effort and technology required to build these as well as the impressive roads through these mountains is simply amazing (and must have cost an amazing amount of money). Tunnels have been simply gouged pr bored straight through the base of selected mountains- some tunnels are less than 200m long with most approx 300-400 long. We ...

... t too bad - still early in the day and a pleasant temperature. Then we had an amazing long descent down beautiful roads - lots of hairpins before coming to the valley floor. We had a relatively long flat stretch then and fortunately, Terry, Dave, Paul and I joined a group who were moving along at a pretty fast pace and were able to work together taking turns to lead. During the night the wind howled around the refuge and the rain pelted the building. In the morning the weather forecast was for showers in the morning with winds up to 80 km per hour, and rain in the afternoon. Not very promising! We decided to go ahead as a whole day of playing scrabble on ...

... out. Starting the descent we overlooked a beautiful scene through gaps that were occasionally appearing in the clouds. There was a series of 4 lakes spread out before us about 350 meters below. Looking extremely tiny in this vastness we spotted the refuge which lifted our spirits. The path downwards was very rocky and, especially in the driving rain, difficult to negotiate. But by taking our time we reached the refuge ...

... us, but as they were camping we had the 10 bed dormitory to ourselves, there were no other guests. We are finding that not very many people are walking this section of the GR 10, probably because accommodation is very limited. To begin the day we had a transfer by car from Aunac to St Lizier de Ustou. The very friendly taxi driver made a small detour for us so we could get some money out of a teller machine in a town along the way. When he dropped us off the trail of ...
