NOV 3, Thursday: Today was our transfer day ...
Auschwitz and Birkenau
... with their families so they brought their most valuable treasures with them.
Some travelled for over 10 days to 2 weeks and so many died on the way. On arrival they had their belongings taken away and then they had to line up women and children one line and men the other.
The entrance gate still stands with it's metal inscription "Arbeit Macht Frei" - work makes one free.

Beauty and Sorrow
... the river and walked up a tall hill to the mound. I don't think I ever truly understood the story connected with the mound, but it lead us to the Quarry, which is a little known site so we had the place all to ourselves. The quarry also functioned as a concentration camp at one point but without the tour guide or much information on the site, we were attracted to the Sepia colored site and the eerie silence all around us. Shopping and the movies!
... we went to the movies again. This time we saw 'Stosunki Miedzymiastowe’(Go the Distance) with Drew Barrymore and Justin Long. Love watching and listening to all the Polish ads! Cost us around $6.50 Australian each. Had a full Polish meal (trying to have only one main meal a day) from the Cafeteria for $6 each. Really splashed out! Having fun trying the many different types of food here. We have our eye on a Ukranian restaurant just up the street for one night next ...
A few days in Poland
... lazy boys and convert an old barge/boat to an oversize swimming pool. It's quirky but it seems to work. However much of the area was still covered in silt from the floods that ended a week or so prior to our arrival so I don't think the beach would be seeing much action for the next week.
