Departure Day - Part 2: Out of Eden

... and it was all excitement again.

I said my farewells and looked back to wave as I passed through passport control, and then I was on my own.

Another short wait outside the 'King' and then it was on with the packs. Locked up the bike and found my way to my cabin with only one false start (went down to deck 6 - but on the starboard rather than the port side and there was no connecting corridor). I then donned my wind proof and ...

Meeting the Postman & my family!

... up the bikes, we all headed off towards Scarborough to pop in and see Nathan aka the "Postman" & "Dot". Nathan rode from Sydney to London on a moped (named Dot) earlier this year and is a really lovely one off character. We all turned up & his Father supplied tea & biscuits for us all. Thanks Nathan & good luck with the book.

I was getting really excited ...

Day 1- 251 miles

... sheets. Let's hope my 3 other room mates don't mind my snoring! At least I got there early and bagged the bottom bunk!

Up early to get some breakfast and to try to work out where to head to tomorrow. Nothing booked yet...let's see what happens. Left the LR tonight with a strange rattle, not sure what it is, sounds serious, lets hope I can work it out tomorrow and it doesn't cost too much :-(

Lonesome George's insomnia

... guitar that strums like a six year old sawing enthusiasticaly away on their first violin lesson, I am meant to return a musical genius, a self-taught prodigy, star of every future camping trip. Like thats ever going to happen...no doubt if the green haze I envelop myself in in the coming months ever lapses enough for an outburst of creativity I will indeed believe myself to be the next Bob Dylan but in fact be revelling in a delusion greater than that of Lister's ...

From Coventry to Newcastle

... Dan and I went to the toilet at Starbucks, then headed to the tourist information Centre. We wanted to walk up the spire but the Church wasn't reopened until 1pm, so we lined up at got a Cod and chips at a Fish 'n Chip shop. The fish and chips were a bit oiley, the fish inside the batter was very nice, the chips a bit average. We watched a street performer get out of a straightjacket and chains whilst we ate. He was pretty entertaining ...

This is Norman architecture.

One of the reasons we wanted to stay in York was so we could go to Durham and Lincoln. So after doing our laundry (more about that later) we got on the train 2 stops back up the line to the ancient cathedral town of Durham. When I went there in ’75, my mother asked me to find the Venerable Bede when I went to Durham. I was young and silly and didn’t want to admit that I didn’t know who he was. Now I do and love him so. He was around Durham before the ...

Back in the North East

... bedroom ready for the relocation company to come on Wednesday. We basically started around 9am and didn't finish until after 7pm, with a brief stop to say goodbye to my parents, and to eat lunch and tea. Needless to say, we slept very well that night. Wednesday the packers arrived to pack up all our stuff. We used Crown Relocations as with work I get a corporate deal, which gives us various advantages, the main ...

From the Irish Sea to the North Sea On Two Wheels

... carry me into Keswick. Upon my arrival there it was immediately clear that something was up downtown. Was this parade for me? Nope. Turns out it was the day the carnival was coming to town, and the locals were lining the streets to welcome them, not me. Easily located my B&B, The Yew Tree House. Tiny room, but very cozy. Headed out in search of an evening meal and a beer, both of which were located at The Dog and Gun. Keswick is a hub for walkers, cyclists and ...

Out of Scotland Already?!

... monarch from Fergus I to Charles II. It's a nice, quick lesson on Scottish royalty. The other room was Mary, Queen of Scots' Bedroom. This was the room where the famous Rizzio murder took place. It's rather eerie to know that you're walking in the same area in which history took place. Other than those two rooms, the palace is pretty boring.

While the palace is boring, the grounds are a site to see. They contain the usual fantastic gardens found in Great ...
