After breakfast Dave and I opted for an optional excursion which took us on the Ardeche Steam Train. We enjoyed a scenic ride along the Ardeche Mountains. The train took us to places that tour busses could not. We saw spectacular views of waterfalls, gorges and deep valleys. There also was an aqueduct built to store and provide water for the region. Day 26: the downpour the previous afternoon accompanied us right through the evening and only broke in the morning. The afternoon and evening cruise down the river became a light show as lightning continuously lit up the sky and the heavy rain of storm proportions made the journey very different. Day 25: we heard the 4.00am departure through our sleep haze, but we're rudely awoken at the sound of grinding sounds like scrapping along gravel just before 6am. Thankfully it was only entering a lock but suffice to say we were awake and so another day on the river.
