... agreed to head toward the orange hotel. The only problem was now how to get to the hotel; it was perched on the edge of a steep cliff and there was no obvious route up. It was at this point that a small friendly looking chap accosted Duncan: “do you need a hostel?” he asked. Duncan decided this was probably a good moment to throw caution to the winds as far as communicating with touts on the street went and followed the chatty man down the road to his hostel. “Doesn ...

Fun and games in Chile!

... our stay in Pucon...climbing the volcano Villarica....truely amazing. It is an active volcano, "what a brave individual you are" I hear you say…however the last time it erupted was in 1984, although the volcano just down the road erupted 3 months ago, so was a risky business, but we were fearless! It turned out that the climb was a damn scary experience at times and not quite the gentle stroll the tour operators had sort of implied it would be! The first section required us ...

... this skating over ice that i´m mostly accustomed too.

The day started with an interesting drive, as we ascended to the lofty height of 3000 metres above sea level. We got stuck in one long traffic jam up the mountain, needed to put chains on our wheels to stop us skidding (definitely required), and we saw another car with a crushed roof as a result of an avalanche of snow. Good driving from Felipe got us there safe!

As well as the black and red ...

... get a Domino-style completo (hot dog) with (of course) mayo, tomato, and "American sauce". I was impressed that this sauce actually closely resembled cole slaw, a true American phenomenon. It was good but entirely too messy. I also had a fresh raspberry juice, something I may never have the priviledge of drinking again. My waiter told me he had worked there for 43 years. He was really friendly and did more talking to me than working ...

... any glacier at all! I felt bad for the Canadan girl who was with us as she missed out on seeing the glacier too. Pretty disappointing all round really. By this time I was feeling even worse and was just managing to hold it all together. We walked back to the car and headed off to look for fossils. I managed to sneak off for a wee then, but still felt bad. A shame because we were surrounded by pretty amazing scenery, but I just couldn´t enjoy ...

Michael's First Week Teaching

... few quizzes and tests... I feel so much better now that I know what is going on... and I'm excited to be trying something new for me... I've never taught older students, let alone students who don't speak the language I speak... It will be very interesting and not-so-easy, but I'm up for the challenge... hopefully I can meet with my students outside of class so they can help me with my Spanish (in exchange for extra help with their English of course!)

Actually got off our asses and went for a walk!!

Today's lunchtime episode was a moment of fun for myself, but maybe not Lorna. Upon starting to eat her lunch....plop....bird dung straight on her right arm!! Extremely funny in itself, but to be followed by more. After the initial abuse was over and with Lorna finally thinking that she had given a poor little sparrow what for.....plop....straight on her lunch plate!! By now, I was in bits as Lorna began shaking her fist at the trees ...

Hitting rock bottom in Santiago

... through any of Santiago's park along the Rio Mapocho River and you would know this is where couples meet for romantic encounters. We though parts of Europe were well known as kissing parks but the couples in Santiago would surly put them to shame. Sundays also seemed like a day where all the street buskers and jugglers got together to show off their skills. In one particular square there must have been 20 - 30 jugglers all going at the ...
