Day 43 - Independence Pass & Aspen

... put his GoPro on the roof so it took a picture every 2 seconds....the results are attached as a time lapse. Once we got to the top, we stopped off for a bit and walked around, however we were over 12,000 feet and their was sleet so it was pretty cold!! I think when we looked it was about 44 F which I believe is around 6/7 C. Brrrrr

The whole drive was just so awesome and beautiful ...

... then continued to walk around and find where lots of paths lead to. Eventually we had to walk on the highway hard shoulder again until we got to our least now we know for sure that both directions have no footpath for us to access the town...we really wanted to avoid having to drive but not sure walking on the hard shoulder when its snowy and dark is going to be the best idea either!

... seeing the local liquor store called 'Beaver Liquors' and also finding a really nice lake and park called Nottingham Park. There was a bench swing by the lake so we sat and admired the mountains whilst swinging and just taking in all the natural beauty around us.

Avon is such a cute town and pretty modern too with lots of roundabouts (or rotaries as the tomtom keeps telling us!!) and sculptures and ...

... enjoys this break is Mr Pickles who is just now sleeping before we are going hicking in the mountains. The weather here is absolutly amazing reaching above 80 f so we have to wait early afternoon before heading up ! As well I am out of shape after a month just using my right foot to accelerate or braking and my ten fingers to get on the internet.

Aspen reminded me a bit of Banff, cute little ski/snowboard town with lots of hikes in the summer.

Unfortunately, I did not realize how high up Aspen is (2400m above sea level) and once we started our hike at Maroon Bells, I felt quite dizzy and tired. Turns out I must have had some sort of altitude sickness at 3000m above sea level... That happened on our hike in Santa Fe as well.. well, now I know :)

I recovered quickly and finished the hike at least...
