... 251 3 hrs, 8 kms The back side of San Marino is quite different from different from the front side. The front side is quite urbanized with town after town leading to the seemingly unconquerable cliff. The backside is more laid back rolling hills--even the slope leading to mountaintop capital doesn't look so difficult to climb, sort of detracting from the theory that San Marino maintained its independence because it was impossible to conquer. ...

... There is a pedestrian crossing with a full time policemen there in a bright yellow uniform telling you when to cross with grand sweeping gestures. Might seem a bit unnecessary, but then again with a population of only 25,000, you’ve gotta take special care of your pedestrians! I take a minute to gaze from the clifftop to the valley below... wander through a couple back alleys and the quiet little plaza of Faetano... then I follow a road that I think will take me to the valley again... ... at the Old City. This is Saturday evening after all, and I suspect that that’s where the excitement might be… At first I don’t see a lot going on… just a plaza turned into a parking lot, but then I see a crowd of people in an alley up ahead… I go closer to see and find… One of the coolest bands I’ve ever heard. I’m not sure what you’d call the style-- It’s like polka meets flamenco meets heavy metal… ...

... town. Here I take a break from the boardwalk and head down for a barefoot hike along the endless beach. Darkness is setting in, but I have nothing to worry about... I've already done my Balleria video clip and I don't have to think about missing the last train... I'm going to walk to my hostel in Rimini. Once it's dark I can safely leave my guitar and camera on a rocky tide breaker and float out into the water for a magical nighttime swim. ...
