We took a drive up the road. It was basically free of cyclists bar a few crazy souls, one guy was trying to descend and basically slowing to a stop at the hairpins, to avoid sliding out. The poor bugger had 21 hairpins to deal with to make the bottom unscathed.
At the summit we visited the bike shop and the owner (a pommie) told us ...
... wonderful villages up near the top that mainly service the ski traffic in winter and summer hikers. Two km from the summit of Col du Mollard is one such village, Albiez-Montrond. It can been seen in the pic from the summit view and where I filled my bidons.
I descended the other side of the climb and started with and Italian rider who I left behind a few k's down. He caught up at the bottom in the town of St Jean and said in broken ...
... was still cold and the cloud was very low. I was itching for a ride so decided to tackle some local Cols near us.
They were some great climbs, Villerzembrun climb with its hairpins and early steep ramps out of St Michel and Col de Beau Plan with forest mist through the clouds on quiet roads and only a fool like me out riding them. The early ramps out of St Michel on Villerzembrun were tough but it soon eased off ...
... and if the weather permits I will add the Montee La Toussure at 1705m.
Right outside our doorstep is the road to the Col Du Telgraphe and the Galibier which tops out at a frightening 2645m. That's looking like my Sunday sparrows ride.
We visited the ski village of Valloire today just above (on the road) but below the top of the Telegraphe in elevation. I could see part of the Galibier from there. Its an intimidating looking climb.
Getting up this morning was a bit rough after yesterday's adventure. The weather outside was hideous...still raining and cold and the clouds were coming in through the valley at just above the level of our hotel. It was only 6 degrees Celsius and it wasn't supposed to get warmer than 8 today. We went to the restaurant area for some breakfast and were surprised to see a deviation in the norm as there was no meat or cheese to be found. ...
