... the trains. We had no issue. Perhaps it was the timing or the start of the route. We got on easily and all found seats. We didn't see much of anything from the train because the Cinque Terre tracks run most of the distance in tunnels between Monterosso and Riomaggiore. We went straight back to La Spezia. No more boats.

The villages themselves with the knee-punishing stairways and uphill slopes provided us with a very decent workout ...

Everyone left this morning except Jordan and Rachel. The guy at the hostel told us about another hike we could do in the opposite direction to yesterday. We left from the hostel at about 10am and walked up the road for 45 minutes until we found the start of the trail. This track was a lot easier than yesterday, mainly downhill because we started high up. It took us four and a half hours to do including snack breaks. When we were almost there we had to stop for a ...

        ... the peninsula.

The strata that make up all of this part of the world can make for tricky footing when you are hiking along the strike of the bedding planes. We actually started wishing for stairs even though we have climbed and descended thousands and thousands of stairs and thought we never wanted to see any more! By early afternoon, we were descending steeply into Portovenere, with an incredible view of the ancient Roman Gate/Church ...

... there's a path that flows between them of which there were a number of mudslides and it wiped out the bath but you could visibly see it from the water taxis that we took to go from village to village. One thing Elizabeth and I can both agree upon oh my God a enough with the steps already. There were a Thone of steps for everything that was there today but that was to be expected because we are at the Bluffs of the Mediterranean ...

Must have been more tired than we thought, we didn't wake until 8.00am!!

When we did venture out are wonderful host, Andre, had breakfast ready for us. Fruit, croissants, ham, cheese, breads and coffee. All was good although the weather was not that flash with it raining so unfortunately we had to have breakfast in side. Hopefully it will be better tomorrow and we can enjoy our breakfast outside overlooking the bay.
