In the morning we went to see the Devil's Post Pile near Mammoth Lakes. These unusually shaped rock fingers resulted from cooling lava, millions of years ago. We went over a pass at 9,200 ft and down to the post pile at an elevation of over 8,000 ft. It was 36 deg F when we got there at 9:30am, but a brisk walk at that elevation soon got the heart pumping.

... were turnouts, as the Americans call it, which is a stretch of road you can pull over to, however on this pass, they were tiny and on the side of the road that will potentially plummet you down to the bottom of the mountains! One false move and its over red rover. Its a shame we didn't get any pics, but we both wanted to get off the pass as quickly as we got on it.
