Mammoth walk at mammoth mountain
... if we did see a bear! Sweat was lashing off us and we had no water – totally unprepared for a hike. I had read in the visitor book that this impromptu hike we were now on was for experienced walkers and here we are with 2 babies, no water and a real chance of meeting a bear as night falls. We were so tired we couldn't even speak except to shout the occasional swear word. Mum, maybe it’s lucky you weren’t here ...
Wonder Fall

Although we had some snacks at the top of the falls, we were pretty hungry. A picnic with some noshing sounded perfect and we stopped at Yosemite Village for supplies. The rugged hike was a sharp contrast to the full grocery store. I was not prepared for the amount of development in the village as a whole or the size of the grocery store. I couldn’t help but try to think of what I could cook over the campfire with curry ...

... We went through a number of bona fide ghost towns. Very creepy.
After being on the road for probably three hours (due to a massive traffic jam in the desert - who knew) we realised that we needed to find a motel. This, yet again, instilled a bit of panic in us but, this time, for different reasons: who wants to stop at a motel in ghost town territory!

PCT days 69-77: Sierra City to Tuolumne Meadows
... and it has to be on a weekend. We think it is doable, but our bodies are not too happy about this death march. We thought we could sustain this pace just be eating a lot, but no, the body needs rest too. I don't think we are built to work 14 or 15 hours a day repeatedly like this. Despite a lot of breaks and the altitude, we do 28 miles today and we pushed really hard. Can we handle this ...
