Our morning started with a drive around Vienna. It was Liberty Day and they were celebrating the signing of the contract for everlasting neutrality in 1955 following the war. There were lots of military in town for parades and displays of tanks and other equipment. There is 6 months compulsory military service or 9 months community service. The next morning we wander the streets of Central Vienna before our 1200 tour of the Opera House. It is true - when you wander you do discover! We came across the Anker Clock located in the Hoher Markt Square. This clock is 12 metres in diameter. ... that while stately and grand, gives no hint as to what lies within. Later discovered it was constructed by the cathedral architect who also designed City Hall. Need I say more. Climbing the wide staircase, we had glimpses of halls and reception areas that bespoke its earlier life. The basketball court in the courtyard below reflected the current use of the other sections of the building.

The weather in Vienna this week has been unseasonably hot and humid at about 30C everyday and not much cooler at night. At home we would be staying in our airconditioned house and waiting it out but when you travel you never want to waste a day. We are feeling somewhat wilted most of the time.

We sailed into Vienna on Tuesday early afternoon, having left Budapest 24 hours earlier. Other than sailing through Bratislava the capital of Slovakia this part of the river was mostly uninhabited passing only an odd fort or castle. The riverside was dotted with little fishing huts. We are docked about 20 mins from Vienna at a place called Nusdorf.
