Pantanal Trip Day 1

... Once we got there we were greeted by about 5 caimans sat on the bank of the river, which didn't seem to bothered by our presence. It was clear why they were sat there when the guide caught the first fish and threw it along the bank for the caiman to eat. He then disappeared leaving us to fish and fend off the caimans alone for an hour or so, just giving us the advice to hit them on the nose with the rods if they came too close!

Later on we were introduced to ...

... black things are everywhere. Despite this we actually sleep ok and next morning before sunrise we are woken by the sounds of the wetlands numerous bird's songs and this deep long noise I can't figure that sounds horrible which I later find out is the howler monkeys in the trees. The sound I then recall was similar to the howler monkeys of Mexico in the El Panchen jungle. We were up for brekkie from 6am till 7a and by 8am we are at the horse corral and saddled up and on the way through ...

Weer 18 uur bussen...

... bush. Seen a dead capiburra, a small lake infested with cayman, monkeys, a heap of raccoons we got close to and watched the sunset by the lake. On way back to camp in jeep we went spotlighting and seen heaps of giant spiders. Day 4 Went horse riding in the morning which was really fun. 1 horse kicked my horse twice. A different horse bit me on the leg and then bit my horse on the neck and another horse keep trying to bite me. My ...

Getting Back to Nature in the Pantanal

... little slim, with mainly birds, an iguana up a tree (that I still cannot believe our guide spotted) and some Caiman which are a smaller, timider relative of the crocodile - there is a ridiculous number of them in the Pantanal in the range of 30 million. We were all surprised and waiting for our guide Levy to tell us he was joking when we randomly stopped and were told that this was where we were swimming. Right in the middle of the river that we had just seen Caiman ...

Campo Grande

Early start this morning for our 4am flight. We arrived in Brazil, in Campo Grande. We took the bus to town. They made us go at the back of the bus and each time we wanted to pay they were telling us stuff but had no idea what. We waited at the stop and the woman just directed us towards the youth hostel and that was the end of it. We never understood why we never had to pay. We looked for a moment for our travel agency which was supposed to take us to the Pantanal, a few hours away from ...

... Gerry's advise and go skiing in Chile though and we saw some beautiful scenary up in the Andes at El Colorado. We got a bit over confident by the end of the day and tried a run we really shouldnt of and fell over about 5 times! Lucy flipped over onto her head! but it was great fun and amazing value for money. From Santiago we got a bus two hours north to the city of Valparaiso a great place with a great vibe, small thin streets and colourful houses built ...

Ohh a storm is threatening........!!!

... the 3 hour trek through the forrests and the night drive without incident. A good meal and we hit club duvet early around 9. At midnight I woke up and noticed that the wind was howling outside. I woke Ems and we looked out the window to see the tree nearby was bent right over in the wind, there was plenty of lightening and thunder stanrting to brew. We nomally love this sort of weather so we stayed up and watched and listening as the impending storm ...

... that wasn`t the usual tourist bus of 30 beer drinking holiday makers making as as much noise as possible and scaring away all the wildlife. We had found this tour and it was just to be Bev and I with our tour guide Marcello. He was a native Indian and had lived in the area his whole life. He even lived in his tribe in the jungle naked until he was 15 and was adopted by a family. Arriving at Marcello's house we spent the rest of the day relaxing in a ...

... cheeks for meat. I couldn't do it took one mouthful and ran outside. 7. The beautiful scenery of the place with sheer cliffs a backdrop to the many places we went. 8. Visiting the farms and many different potugese people along the way. On the way back it had rained all night and through the morning so the roads where extremely muddy. We slipped and slid all the way back to Campo Grande in a two wheel drive Hilux. Said goodbye to the boys and was of to Sao Paulo.
