... artist Giotto. Ponte Vecchio is the only bridge in Florence that survived World War II. Hitler said it was too beautiful to destroy

As I was walking down Florence streets I realized that the streets can be one name at one end of the street and another name at the other end. That was interesting. Thank goodness they have a pretty good street map. Florence is the capital city of the province of Florence and the Italian region of TuscanyIn ...

Florence is a city that benefits from a 4 day stay during which time you can really immerse yourself in all the glorious renaissance stuff it has to offer. We had the one day to enjoy it but having been before we did not mind especially as it was a sunny day. I love the Piazza della Signoria, where the statue of David by Michelangelo stands. It is a very good copy however and you need to go to the Accademia to see the original. There is also the wonderful bronze statue of ...

We took a small boat to the island and went around the whole thing to see all of its beautiful cliffs. We were dropped off to spend a few hrs in town so ...

... there we headed to the city hall which we had been told was worth a look. Outside we saw a replica of Michelangelo’s David (the original place it was located) and lots more tourist groups wandering around. The hall/museum was full of frescos and nice looking art.

Time for lunch! We headed to an area of Florence where we had been told by Helene was less touristy (still touristy but it is Florence). We found a downstairs place ...

Long drive to Florence, land of the caring

    ... as fugitives.

The highway system in Italy is perhaps the least developed in any European highway system we have driven on so far. Beyond that, the drivers are completely nuts. Either a driver is crawling along in the right lane at walking pace or on your bumper laying on the horn as if to let you know that the back of your car is on fire. Construction barriers are erected with no activity in sight and the off-camber turns through the hills of Tuscany had me jumping on ...
