      ... took pictures and I talked to a family of bike riders that took pity on our poor hot and tired puppy dog. They offered to share one of their water bottles with her. She survived and so did we, although I don't think any of us would say Lefty was worth it.

      The weather is consistently beautiful so we go to the beach or for walks in the afternoons. We visit the Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge, minus Lily, for a walk ...

      ... on the other. The island is not more that a couple hundred yards wide in places. The fort is part of the National Park System so there is no development on this part of the barrier island. It’s really pretty deserted right now.

      Interesting note: The white sand is ground quartz that has was down the rivers over millennia from the Appalachian Mountains. Who knew water and time could make such beautiful sand from mountain rocks? ...

      ... on the beach, and therefore didn’t have enough driving time left to get anywhere.

      Time to try a new motel. The Red Roof Inn. Not bad, and with our coupon booklet we got a really good price too. No breakfast, but coffee in the lobby, and that’s good enough. We’ve got cereal anyway!

      In the morning we went for a run – a new resolution of mine after weighing myself at the supermarket. It was fun, but hot.
