We were told the Whitsundays is part of the Great Barrier Reef and as we didn't get chance to snorkel there in Cairns, the best place to do it we were hoping this trip would make up for it. We did see a few interesting fish but it was probably on par with the not so good snorkelling sites in Thailand. As we swam back to the boat there were a lot of fish with a massive one that I don't know the name of but it was probably ...

... moment of hesitation, the mental cogs begin a rapid sift through thousands of gnarly grey images...we've got one! A snort and a shift of beady eyes - CROCODILE DEAD AHEAD!!!

It's a big one - Lennie apparently - and we have just enough time to take in his gigantic, knobbly head before he sinks out of sight. Phew, what a RUSH!!!

... reef pool with manta rays and a lemon shark and we pulled up a sun lounger and relaxed, reminded we were meant to be under the sea.

The Bruce Highway stretches from Cairns to Brisbane and is nearly 2000km long. We told Emma our destination was Rockhampton, but we ended up at Kinka Beach, 100km away and right on the beach - serendipitous navigational accident, she's due one. It was a 500km drive from Airlie and we departed just as soon as Julia had Skyped her mum, ...

... one of the top ten beaches in the world. White fine sand washed clean by the sea over many, many years. Beautiful, but had to wear a stinger suit to swim in the sea. See flattering photos. Then on to a different Island to snorkel and see the coral. Disappointingly damaged in cyclones a couple of years ago. Plenty of colourful fish, not so much colourful coral. Reacquainted myself ...
