... by actual inmates and guards from the prison. It was really interesting hearing about the escape attempts, and learning about people like Al Copone and the Birdman. Really bizarrely we were in the gift shop, and there was an old man signing books. It turned out he was an actual Alcatraz inmate from the late 50s/early 60s. How odd would that be? We then made our way back to the mainland and spent a nice afternoon travelling on some of the cable car ...

It was tricky (and we were tired) following the tour guide's instructions to "look left or look right" as those of us facing the back of the bus naturally looked the wrong way! Dunes were on both sides of the highway and buildings were scattered amongst them. After we'd left Monterey we quickly hit rural farmland. There were signs all along the sides of the road advertising fresh produce eg. avocados 7 for $1, grapefruits 10 for $1. Miles and miles of farmland with the odd farmhouse, shed or roadside stall. Sometimes in the field ...

... Hill on water. We saw a ship - I think it was call the Balthua & it's a huge sailing ship which dated back to the 1800's. It spent some time in the 1900's delivering Oregon wood to Australia! As it was a music festival there were lots of people singing a sea shanty tune or two, but we didn't see any lusty wenches around. The strange thing was that a heap of people knew these songs of the sea...maybe there's a club here you can join or something. As we were leaving the sailing ...
