... afternoon. On the drive in from the airport we noted a lot of houses with flat roofs and many were joined side by side. There was a waterway with floating houses side by side on it. We also saw the Oracle boat shed on the waterfront. Something quirky was a beggar, pacing up and down in front of cars stopped at the lights, with a sign reading "Bet you couldn't hit me with a quarter." It worked as somebody inside a car threw something at him, presumably a ...

... touring bikes exposed us to the elements, unpleasantly at times, but we felt part of the environment, unlike being cocooned in a car. Wherever we stopped, people wanted to hear where we were from, where we were going; and universally expressed surprise and admiration for the undertaking ... and good wishes for our onward journey.

... for dinner. San Fran at night was...interesting. We stayed right near Union Square, tourist area and home to a HUGE Macy's. There are lots of homeless and street performers, even someone playing a bagpipe. There was a young guy dressed as Michael Jackson, and he was singing and dancing.
