... faces. It is starkly beautiful, particularly from the comfort of an air-conditioned car! I would like to go back and hike some of the trails, but it's not for the ill-prepared. Even in the heart of one of picnic areas (with toddlers running free), I interrupted a Diamond-back Rattlesnake out for a mid-morning foray. We agreed to disengage, and no tourists were hurt in the making of this blog.

Along the way - The roadway quickly climbs from Palm Springs to Blythe and halfway there is the little town of Chiriaco Summit. Originally built to provide a rest area for weary travelers, General Patton built an army training base here in 1942 so the town prospered (it's still very small). There's a museum here in his honor with several displays of military hardware.

We arrived at the park just in time to vacate the vehicle, climb a
rock and watch a perfect desert sunset. Many people have told us that
J-tree is primarily a backcountry pack. Trust me, we will be back to
explore more someday unfortunately we have a hot date with Coco Jones
in San Diego.
