... There wasn't enough bedding either, as next morning Jay was unwell, having caught a chill in the night after giving both of the 'blankets' ('sheets' to those of us from cold northern countries!) to us. We immediately gave one of them back, since we had brought our sheet sleeping bag anyway, and offered ibuprofen. We suggested cutting the trip short, but Jay wouldn't hear of it, and insisted on taking us fishing.
Jay clearly loved fishing, and ...
... in the boat with a few other passengers.
The boat trip was great! The Suriname river is about a hundred meters wide and the water was very smooth. Because of the dry season the water level is low, which means that at various places impressive rocks are visible above the surface. At some point we encountered a particularly difficult “soelas”, rapids caused by a group of rocks. Several boats in front were being helped along this very shallow part by ...
Time to move on a bit and so we have travelled about 70 kms to the beach at Les Hattes, this is another famous turtle beach which is directly opposite the Galibi Beach. This is the one for the Giant Leatherbacks; these can grow upto 750 kgs in weight, about the size of a Volkswagen car. We settled down in the car park (N.44.45.59W53.56.45.04) right next to the sand and waited until about 8.30 at night before going for a walk along the beach. I had the ...
Plage Les Hattes, French Guiana mikeandmaryA fairly lazy day today. One of the men from the ferry came round and actually apologised for their behaviour, which was most unexpected. We took a walk around some of the town and did some shopping otherwise that was it. 24th - We did a bit more of a walk around the town today, the area is called Little Paris and was. As well as still is the main administrative centre of the town. The area we were walking was built around 1900 and has such buildings as the original Customs office and ...
St Laurent, French Guiana mikeandmary... dialect called 'taki-taki', which I assumed- wrongly, it turns out- to be some sort of pidgin (i.e. bad) English, destined to follow me around like some **** that just won't go away. Mea culpa mea culpa mea culpa mea culpa hail Mary hail Mary hail Mary hail Mary. While Taki-taki, aka 'Sranan Tongo', is technically considered to be an English Creole, it goes back to the earliest days of colonialism and, unlike Jamaican or other Caribbean creoles ...
Paramaribo, Suriname hardiek... more people before getting out of town. It was soon getting light and we were in the countryside and passing small towns. On the way in from the airport the night before I had noticed that most people's houses are on stilts, and that there were bicycle lanes at the side of the road which I guessed was a Dutch influence. As dawn came and went I saw lots of drainage canals and realised we were on marshland. I wondered if they had been saltmarshes originally ...
Paramaribo, Suriname refugee... in March for a longer stay. Uncle Bissoon bought my ticket and sent me back with a plane to Guyana. The flight was just over an hour and it was so pleasant. I will be the first to admit that I was really nervous about travelling in that little 18-seater, but other than the loud engines, I really enjoyed the flight. We had good weather for most of the way (I could tell when the plane crossed into Guyana: all the sun went away, we were enveloped by dreary rain clouds and ...
Domburg, Suriname sylviaenjeroen... its language, and making friends and sharing skills with its people, all the while being supported by host-country Peace Corps staff, community counterparts, and the Peace Corps headquarters in Washington D.C. Volunteers work as cultural ambassadors for America, too, showing people around the world that not all Americans embrace the same beliefs and political views. Also, we bring back to America knowledge of the country where we served, and are encouraged to educate the ...
Paramaribo, Suriname finefine... a man came up and suggested that we should move as we were below coconuts that he thought might fall on us. We swam and walked the beach, all the stuff of a very lazy weekend. The bad news was that on Sunday night 3 motors were stolen off the boats on the beach. Robbie's was one of them 2 men came along the beach with flashlights at 5:30 a.m. to get him. Apparently this has never happened in Galibi before. We feel so badly for Robbie and his wife. They are sweet people and ...
