Historical Traveler Reviews Kihei Surfside
Four stars is how I feel, in general.
The location, beachwise: Excellent.
You will get an excellent and breathtaking view of ocean and mauka. You are a very short walk from superb sandy beaches and great swimming. If you just want to sit out and zen out, roll out of bed and onto a lawn chair on the pristine lawn. Get your free cup of coffee from 10:00-11:00 and lie back and relax.
The location, everything else-wise: Excellent.
Kihei is a great place to start any Maui adventure because it is as central as you can get while still staying on the beach. For example, if you want to do the Road to Hana, you'll tack on an extra half hour if you stay in Kaanapali (though it is beautiful there, too). Note: if you are looking for an upcountry experience, you wouldn't have chosen Kihei or Wailea in the first place, now would you?
The room, itself: Good.
The best part about the room was that it was a fully-furnished condo with full kitchen and separate bedroom. The living room and lanai offers you a great view (as stated above). No air conditioning was no problem for us in the winter, but I don't think it would pose a major problem in the summer, as you can get a good breeze going through the rooms. The rooms and bathroom were clean, though not pristine like a hotel. Then again, check out those prices at the Grand Wilea or Four Seasons. The only real negative for us was, as stated in other reviews below, noise. The bedrooms have windows which don't do the best job shutting out the noise, and the walkways outside the rooms produce a tunneling, focusing effect on all sound. Even this wasn't bad, though, as mostly everyone honored the quiet hour requirements (9:00 PM-8:00 AM). You could also sleep in the living room which would give you the added benefit of being lulled to sleep by the sound of the surf.
Nightlife: Mostly Quiet. Is this good? You decide. This is what we wanted, and what we got. When we did want some nightlife, we hopped over to the fun on the strip, or took a drive to Lahaina. If you wanted serious, screamingly loud nightlife, you should have booked a hotel on Waikiki.
Wallet factor: Very Good. You aren't nickled and dimed here. Since this is a condo, you can save a lot by buying and preparing your own food. This is especially nice at breakfast when you'd prefer to sit on your lanai eating a bagel, rather than going to a restaurant for a $20 breakfast!
Would I stay here again: Yes.
Semi-related note: You did get your copy of Maui Revealed, didn't you? This $15 book has the potential to save you hundreds of dollars, and will make your stay more fun. Take it with you everywhere--it is the ultimate Maui reference (and this coming from someone whose read a lot of Maui literature and books).
For 90$/night it is a very good value. Good things are: the beach is fantastic and pretty good snorkling. Good size of the room. Not to far to drive to different attractions and shops. Beautiful surrondings.
Not so good: No air condtion, you could hear the next door neighbours
and the place is boring.
Would I stay here again - Maybe!
Perfect quiet getaway!
I have been to Hawaii several times. For this trip I looked for a place on the south side of Kihei into Wailea that was still affordable. I wanted a condo with a kitchen, a beach to swim and snorkle and a little out of the way of the hustle and bustle of S. Kihei road. Kihei Surfside has all this. It is very comfortable. I was worried about it lacking air conditioning but with the afternoon tradewinds and setting the windows just right, it was perfect. We had room 613 which was top floor towards one end. This made it a little quieter (away from the elevator). It was clean. There are two top restaurants in walking distance - and a fantastic beach. There's also a convenience store in the resort next door. The best part is the view from every window is of the ocean and the west Maui mountains. There is a pool with a large green lawn dotted with palm trees to relax away the day. It also is easily accessable to shopping and any other activities on Maui. Completely recommend it! It's not a 5 star resort but a very comfortable, inexpensive Maui escape.
Be aware! somethings are just not right
the view was great however their is no privacy once you are in your room, you can hear every word spoken in your bedroom (the window is open to the hallway) so everyone hears you, even taking a shower with the door closed! their is no air conditioning so you have to keep these windows open and the door slightly open to get any breeze in the room. about 5 pm it is just too hot in the condo to even be in there the sun just beats down into the condo and closing the blinds just makes it like a hot oven. Another problem is something called "thatching" is done on the grass and there is no prior annoucement of this when booking our vacation. (the lawn is cut for two days straight from 8am to 5 pm for two weekends in a row, their are 20 plus people cutting and raking the lawn, it is loud and nothing is usable during this time because of all the grass and workers. Then when they are all done, all we seen was brown grass and smelled cow maneuer for the rest of our vacation. the office staff stated that they do this once a year different times but didn't have a schedule. Be aware of these things so you are fully informed before making your vacation plans at the surfside
Loved the Surfside, fantastic views!
We had a fabulous time at the Kihei Surfide...the views were spectacular! We had condo #202 which was closest to the water on the second floor. We could practically dive into the ocean from our lanai! The view was really nice since there are palm trees, a lovely lawn, and rocks right in front of the condo.
The condo itself was in excellent condition and very nicely decorated. Lots of room (we had a 1 bed/1.5 bath), with dishwasher. No A/C but you didn't need it at all since it was cooler at night and lots of trade winds.
Finally, the lawn was amazing! It was litterally a putting green (and a big one!). The bbq's were great, although sometimes a bit crowded during dinnertime. We had a great vacation watching the sunsets from our lanai, it was priceless.
We booked the condo through Maui Condo (---mauicondo---), they were very friendly, and offered us a discount, and gave us great service.
Fantastic location with spectacular views
I booked a trip to Maui on expedia and selected the Kihei Surfside for our accommodations after reading the reviews on your website. We were there the first week on June 2004 and it was a prefect location for a relaxing and no stress vacation. We couldn't believe our eyes when we opened the door to room 612. The condo was beautiful and the view from the sixth floor was spectacular. My 15 year old was even impressed. The entire condo was in great condition and everything was very clean. From the condo's balcony and windows you only see the ocean, coastline and palm trees. No looking into windows of the next building. The only building next to the Surfside is across the parking lot and on the side of the building with the entrances. That building has a small store with anything you would need and an excellent restaurant with a patio overlooking the beach. I was concerned about no air conditioning but we had no need for it with the ceiling fans and wonderful cool ocean breezes. It was so relaxing to just sit on the balcony and watch and listen to the ocean. Every evening there was a magnificent sunset, which you can watch from your balcony or from the lounge chairs on the beautiful green lawn. This would be a fantastic place to stay during the whale-watching season (Nov. to April).
There is no beach directly in front of the complex but it's just about a 1 minute walk around the building next door to a gorgeous wide 3 mile long sandy beach. The ocean is different shades of blue and it's very clear and warm. It's shallow enough to be able to walk or swim out quite a ways. We went to the beach every day and even on the weekend it wasn't crowded at all. The condo has a very nice swimming pool right next to the ocean, which we only used once since the beach was so close. Kihei is a nice town with 3 large grocery stores, a Longs Drug, and many, many excellent restaurants and shops including Starbucks. Lahanni is about a 30 to 45 minute drive away depending on traffic. At the harbor in Lahanni try the parasailing or the afternoon sail on the Scotch Mist II, both were fantastic. We booked our excursions on the internet before we went but found out you can get a better price by booking at one on the booths located in Lahanni along the main street. Many different prices all lower than what we paid ahead of time.
We are making plans now to return next year to the Surfside. For our family it's the only place to stay on Maui. If you're looking for someplace that is reasonably priced and is in a beautiful and peaceful location then the Surfside is it.
Eventhough you can't see the actual beach, it is basically a couple steps away. The best part, and what I like to do is lay down on a lawn chair at night, drink a fruity drink, and look up at the stars, while listening to the waves crash on the rocks. Once or twice a week, gardeners are out there mowing the lawn to make it as beautiful as possible. It is so lush and green! The inside of the condo is great and homey. I always feel at home, but even better!! It is cozzy and very affordable and I recommend it to everyone and anyone.
Our whole group was happy
This is a great affordable property. Every unit has a lanai that is oceanfront. We booked 7 units for a week in June and all of them were very nice. Most are 1 bd/1bath, some are 1 bd/1.5 bath, and 2bd/2bath.
It is a quiet location with a small pool, free parking, elevator, constant trade winds, 2 minute walk to beautiful Keawakapu beach, on the border of Wailea/Kihei, south Maui.
The price is great for them being oceanfront. They have a lot of repeat business and a nice front desk downstairs.
There is a laundry room downstairs and some units have their own.
As long as you realize this is not a 'resort' and don't expect those amenities, you'll be thrilled here.
Only thing it would be nice to have that it doesn't, is a jacuzzi next to the pool.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property.
Kihei has grown to be a busy, bustling town on Maui, full of condo rentals. Most are not oceanside, but Kihei Surfside is, and what a view! They have wonderful public space. Nice lawn, great pool, and good outdoor grill. A very nice beach is a 2 minute walk. Units can vary, but most are acceptable. A lot of space at a very reasonable rate. The 2 bedroom, 2 bath ones are great for families and 2 couples, and are on the ends of the building. No air conditioning, but if the trade winds are blowing, you don't need it. Overall, a great value for an oceanside condo in Maui.
Beyond Paradise in Kihei
We have stayed at the Four Seasons and The Ritz, but there is nothing like the cool breezes and tropical sunsets you get at the Kihei Surfside. Yes, you will have to cook for yourself and there is no rooms service, but that is more than made up for with the best location, beach and setting in the world. If you want a clean, friendly, fun, place to stay with the best that Maui has to offer...this is it.

NO! We drive and drive ending up on a dirt road that is cut through a lava field. It is beautiful in an eerie way, but definitely not what we are looking for. Turns out we are at the 'Ahihi-Kina'u Natural Area Reserve - several miles past where we want to be. Turn around, backtrack, go ...
