... Wow, what a drive down the coast, totally different from Maui. but equally as beautiful. Built on black lava flats this area preserves different aspects of traditional Hawaiian life( you can take the history teacher out of the classroom but you can't take the history teacher out of the Gramma). ... and its moons though... And the hot chocolate was great (it was freeezing at the summit - did I mention that Big Island had 11 out of the 13 climates on Earth?). I feel a bit guilty... I didn't think about the flash on my camera being considered light pollution, and got told off for taking a photo (apparently it takes your eyes 15 mins to adjust). I am back in my bed now and getting ready for an early start tomorrow to visit the Green Sand beach! Until tomorrow night! ...

... Oh, before we started the tour, we first had to wash our hands and arms all the way to the elbow. And we had to sanitize our shoe soles before entering the sea horse farm. They're very strict to make sure the sea horses do not get infected.

In the exhibit room where they had many different kinds of sea horses, we saw some amazing sea horses. I tried to take photos but none came out well. Oh, there was another amazing thing, the sea dragon! ...

... of the lava. In walking around the crater rim you can see big cracks in the ground where the crater will eventually crumble. It really makes you realise the power of nature and how little people can do to control it.

We left the crater and drove over to some steam vents. Really odd seeing clouds of steam rising out of the ground. We had dinner at a cafe near the crater, it used to be a US Military R&R camp but ...
