From the airport we caught a taxi to our cute little apartment right in the heart of the city. I found it on booking.com but it ended up being a private set up where someone met us personally to show us the apartment and hand over the keys for our stay. All the homes within central Amsterdam are similar. They are tall, slanted buildings with large windows. There is a pulley mechanism at the top of each building, which is how get furniture into the different floors (since the stairs are too small and there is no lift).

The city itself has 3 main canals. The water seems A LOT cleaner (smells that way at least) than the river ...

... balcony. We have a metal balcony that reaches around belly button height, then a temporary net that is stuck around the rest of the ledge. I think this might be in case you think this place is so bad it will stop you from jumping the four floors.
