      ... delighted to see the amazing views into the crater and of Maui in every direction. The hike was challenging as we dipped into the edge of the crater later in the day when the light was less bright and more golden.

      ... get "pretty sketchy". Rental car companies forbid travelers to take this route, for if anything should happen, they would not come to the rescue and you'd be on your own. We even met a couple from our resort who said they drove the back side later in the day, and got pretty freaked out because their phones didn't have service and the roads were pretty bad.
