after tamarindo, we drove south along the coast towards playa nosara. due to the lack of road signs, we drove right by it and ended up in Playa Guiones. it looked like a cool little surf town but 90% of the hotels and restaurants were closed ...

Will Work For Board

... dogs wasn't eating very well. She didn't have a penny (or colone) to give us for our work. Over the next 4 days, I spayed and neutered 40+ animals, many belonging to families like Claudia's. With the animals that Rosalinda did, the numbers were up above 60. We used injectable anesthetic (Telozil, Ketamine, Acepromazine and Atropine for those who care), and instruments sterilized in a pressure cooker and a cold sterile. My hands were ...

Costa update #3 and a broken tooth!

... fun. I can feel my surfing improving by the day and am loving it. I even got a mini-barrel!! All I can say is Woo Hoo!! More travels So I decided to leave Tamarindo to go to Malpais, at the tip of the peninsula. I travelled with Dan (www.dansgarbage.com - check it out, it's pretty cool), a really cool guy from California who is half Chinese, half Brazilian. May be it's the Asian look that reminded me of the Pinas that made me chat to him. We got ...

The Arribada

... and stayed there for ten bucks which was worth every penny as we got to sleep on a comfy double bed and have a proper shower not involving buckets (our first time in three months!). We awoke to the sound the cockerels and insects in the muggy heat of the morning. We showered, loved, dressed and went out to have breakfast at a cafe serving amazing Galla Pinto (Frijoles, Rice and Eggs). This is simply amazing and I will make it for anyone who wants it when I return as I could ...

Tamarindo

... is absolutley amazing. Although there is some major development going on, this place still is small and has a pure feel (the roads are still dirt) and extremly laid back, which is crazy bc from what we had been told this is one of the MOST touristy places in the counrty...I can only imagine that other places will be like. I learned to surf, so mark that off the 'Things to do before I die" list. Mike was proud he was my teacher and I got up the ...

Leatherbacks or not?

... tortuous for us both, particularly me and my need for organisation! Everyone was just hanging around inc the staff, no communication or plan. We signed in and were given numbers for some reason. Shuffled into a room to watch a video and be told about the park. Didnīt know that leatherback turtles (so called as no shell) were the largest in the world and could be up to about 5ft! Were glad to see them in the video as certainly werenīt ...

Talking with iguanas

... won, we were happy, and previews for the next season came on. After seeing yet another tropical location Rachel yelled, "They should send Probst to Greenland - I'd like to see him try to survive there with no warmth!" She yelled so loudly that she actually startled both of us. After the initial shock wore off Darren and I both started cracking up at her. We had no idea she was even paying attention to the show and to have her scream at the tv was comical.

First day of surf!!!!

... sudden. We decided to change rooms (the hotel is 500 meters from the apartments we were staying in) at 7:00p.m., in the rain. We dawned our backpacks, said "adios" to the bugs and set off in the rain. $15 more and we've got ourselves beach front living for the next 5 days... minus the bugs. That's it for now, we want to make it back in time to catch the water taxi man before he leaves... Pura Vida, Shane and Jaime

Costa Rican Highlights Part 2

... beach collecting shells, taking photos and wondering what it would be like to spend some time in an isolated hut we saw in the forest overlooking the beach. That night, I met up with Dario and Angelo again, and we passed the time they had before catching their night bus back to San Jose with some local beer and international conversation. By the next morning, it was time to get outta Tamarindo, so we slowly, begrudgingly made our way out to the jungle for a ...
