... This hotel is much larger and more typical to the U.S. than our previous hotels. We just dropped off our bags and went for another two hour drive to Lasithiti Plateau. Lasithiti Plateau is located inland and at a much higher elevation than Heraklion and is a series of twenty tiny villages. Some of the buildings in the villages still have no roofs from bombings in the World War Two invasion of Crete. The villages are known ...

... given that it was a manual with a strange way of getting into reverse that almost caused us lots of trouble on the first day of the car hire.

Day three in Crete is, sadly, our last day here. We are getting picked up at midday to be taken to the airport for a flight to Rhodes, and our last island stop in this part of the holiday.

She asked uncomfortable bathroom questions as we were eating our dinner, asked us if it would be winter in Canada when we returned home in five weeks time, and suggested that she was often uncomfortable ordering wine in the United States because they all seem to drink beer. When I pointed out to her that the U.S. is the fourth largest producer ...

... sweltering (mid-70s in Istanbul, mid-80s everywhere else) and the 4 hours of rain occurred while driving. The value in Turkey has been great. Lodging ranging from 60€ to 120€ per night for a family of 4 seemed quite reasonable and 2/3rds of the places had a pool! Most sit down meals cost around $10 per person, a doner kabab was usually around $3 and a large beer is about $4. Best location: Cappadocia Best hotel: Sultan Cave Suites Best adventure: Saklikent Gorge ...

... 45 flight left on time and 45 minutes later we were on the ground in Heraklion, Crete. We picked up our rental car and at 5:30 were enjoying the view of our Suite overlooking the very commercial town of Heraklion (population 120,000). We were ready for some different food, so headed out to Amalia's Kitchen - a TexMex / Greek restaurant run by a women originally from Houston. It was conveniently 2 blocks from our hotel and next to a park with a ...
